Re: 1983 Rocha colheita
If the lid fits, use it! That's funny, I didn't even notice the lids got switched! Rocha 1983 Colheita: (bottled 2005) Nice amber color, with almonds, vanilla and cloves on the nose, along with the aroma of fresh baked bread. Fairly light mouth feel, but very, very sweet on the palate, with candied ...

Re: Emergency - NYC Friday Mar 20: GC1980
My mistake. I'm very curious to try them, as I also have never had a Roriz. I will be decanting mine before I leave for class, probably around 10 or 11 am tomorrow.

Re: Emergency - NYC Friday Mar 20: GC1980
Well, for that matter I have a 1995 Roriz. So I'm going to completely forget about the Messias Colheita and propose we try GC 80 and 97, Roriz 95 and 97, the 75 oddity and the pre-war oddity. How does that sound to everybody?

Re: Emergency - NYC Friday Mar 20: GC1980
I just noticed I have a bit of an oddity: a Messias 1980 Colheita. Would you guys rather try the Niepoort Passadouro 95 or the Messias 80 Colheita? The Messias might fit with the 'curiousities' theme that seems to be developing here.

Re: Emergency - NYC Friday Mar 20: GC1980
JohninNYC will be adopting a bottle from me. Looking at what I happened to have on hand I decided on a Niepoort Qta do Passadouro 1995 for John's contribution.

Re: 1989½Â±4½ Cálem
1989½Â±4½ Cálem: This was a stroke of genius on JDAW's part. The blending experiment was remarkably successful. Intense, rich fruit with a long finish, sweet and fruity. A bit of subtle smokiness on the finish, and Eric T suggested watermelon. The Cálem blend was my second favorite port of the even...

Re: 1994 Cálem
1994 Cálem: Very dark indeed, but not completely opaque. Also very closed with a little dark fruit and a vaguely floral note on the nose (violets, perhaps?) Flavor strongly of molasses, fairly tannic and pungent, rich and fairly sweet with a bit of a 'roasted' finish. Eric T suggested that the flav...

Re: 1985 Cálem
1985 Cálem: Surprisingly light tawny color. upon nosing and tasting, it was quite evident that this was just a little past its prime. Still fairly decent, however, with a nose of milky caramel and yogurt. The taste was quite smooth, with no discernable tannins remaining, again I noted that it was '...

Re: 1985 Noval
1985 Noval: The color here was fairly light, ruddy but slightly tawny. The nose was rather sweet, but it also had an interesting medicinal character that made me think of Bactine antiseptic spray. Also some light fruit and wood notes as well. I found the flavor to be quite sweet with lively fruit -...

Re: 1985 Dow
I'm looking forward to returning to this one to see how it opens up. Again, color a translucent medium red, the nose was very closed, with hints of plummy fruit. The flavors were slightly sweeter and fuller, with hints of blueberry. In keeping with the 'vinegar' theme, if the 83 Dow reminded me of a...

Re: 1983 Dow
1983 Dow: I preferred this to the 85 Dow. The color was a nice clear mid-tone red. I found it to be more fragrant than the 85, vaguely reminiscent of apple cider vinegar (but in a good way) with a slight woodiness to it. On the palate, milk chocolate and cherries, fairly dry and smooth, although sl...

Re: 1985 Fonseca
1985 Fonseca: Color fairly dark with hints of anise and licorice on the nose, despite the TCA. There were still some nice flavors, rich fruit and some spice - cloves, which I also noted were apparent in the Fonseca 1970.

Re: 1970 Fonseca
1970 Fonseca: Color a nice clear ruddy hue. The nose had a good deal of floral (rose) and spicy components to it (cloves and caraway). The spice followed through on the palate with flavors of root beer/sassafrass/sarsaparilla. A very long finish with brown sugar and just a hint of smokiness. Absolu...

Re: Graham vertical in New York
In Rhode Island I have a random Graham oddity: cask sample of Malvedos, I think it's 1988 but I'm not sure. I will bring it when I come back from the holiday. Perhaps I could contribute that and/or adopt a bottle.

Re: 1985 Fonseca
Fonseca 1985: Darker than the 83, and also more well balanced on the nose and palate. For me, everything seemed to be nearly perfectly put together - this was an archetypal vintage port with all the right components of fruit, sweetness, and rich chocolatey character, and I couldn't detect any flaws...

Re: 1983 Fonseca
Fonseca 1983: Color fairly light. Here I'm comparing it to some of the other ports of the evening - to me it bore a strong resemblance to the Graham 85 and the Nacional 85, both of which had odd candied citrus, medicinal cough syrup and children's asprin qualities on the nose. The Fonseca 83 had so...

Re: 1985 Graham’s
Graham 1985: color a bit lighter than the 83. Comparing it to the 83 was like night and day - the 85 had a very powerful candied citrus, slightly medicinal nose, Dave noted mead, which I agree with. To me it seemed to more closely resemble the Nacional 85 than the Graham 83, both had very unusual s...

Re: 1983 Graham’s
Graham 1983: Dark purple in color. Very nice dark, plummy nose with notes of floral perfume. On the palate, still fairly tannic, rich plummy flavor with a hint of dark roast coffee on the finish. Definitely my style of port, and my top port of the evening.
