Re: May 23rd, 2024 - LBV - The Young Turks
We are of this moment, I think, with Zak unable to make it, only nine strong; so great opportunity to bring friends and relatives.. Sounds like Rich has a couple of potential additional guests. I do but they're trying to shuffle plans at the moment so I don't have any positive confirmations yet. @u...

Re: May 23rd, 2024 - LBV - The Young Turks
Tom, given the few drop outs we've had would it be ok to boost the numbers? I have a friend or two who aren't members here who may well be very interested in joining us for this event. Absolutely - new faces very welcome Err…shouldn’t we go to the reserve list firstly-or has this been exhausted? I ...

Did they make menu changes in the end? I was holding off after the previous post in this thread. Will take a look and confirm shortly.uncle tom wrote:Need food orders ASAP please - will reference the standard food order in the event of default

Re: Aged LBVs, 5 March 2024
This thread along with the tasting notes so far are fascinating and very enlightening! I wonder if the more modern LBVs from the likes of Sandeman and Quevedo might stand the test of time in a similar way...

Re: Mould under foil/on top of cork
I believe cellar mould is a form of penicillin and is essentially the same mould as you find on the skin of a white rinded soft cheese (like Camembert or Brie). It’s harmless and can be seen in some well reputed cellars to a spectacular degree. I don’t worry about cellar mould on my bottles or cork...

Re: Mould under foil/on top of cork
I've seen it often enough (saw it just yesterday, when opening a Fonseca Panascal 2004). It's not really an issue, as long as the mould doesn't extend to the *inside* of the cork. It's a good idea to clean it, though, as, when pouring, the wine might come into contact with mould that might be prese...

Mould under foil/on top of cork
This is a first for me, but I'm a relative newbie when it comes to properly cellared ports - I opened a bottle of Warre Cavadinha 2001 ahead of a tasting with a few friends tonight and found white mould under the cap. I dealt with it by disinfecting it, thoroughly rinsing the area and then immediate...

Re: 1977's - June 11th 2024
Please can you add me to the reserves? I am interested but have no '77s so would need to work out a plan to acquire some or adopt, and the associated costs. I'm sure that adoption will be an option here .... Of course but I'm aware that there will be plenty of owners of the '77 vintage who would wa...

Re: Thoughts on LBVs
I feel like this was the same with more recent Sandeman LBVs that I've tried - massive tannic beasts that really need time to age rather than being blended for drinking on release. My purchase strategy for LBVs is focused on those I think will age the best. Warre currently gets top billing by virtu...

Re: Thoughts on LBVs
The 2007 Sandeman VP is also pretty spectacular, though on release I could barely taste it because it was so tannic. I feel like this was the same with more recent Sandeman LBVs that I've tried - massive tannic beasts that really need time to age rather than being blended for drinking on release.

Re: Thoughts on LBVs
I’ve just opened a bottle of Sandeman 2007 LBV. While it’s nowhere near the age that Andy and Tom have been discussing, I can confirm that with 17 years of aging, this LBV is effing delicious! Good to know. When I had a Sandeman 2011 LBV a few years ago in lock down, it seemed it may need 47 years ...

Kari and I will be in London May 10-17, with the primary reason being the Graham's vertical on May 14 and the Taylor Single Harvest tasting on May 16 . But since London is much closer to Sweden than Seattle is, she plans to use this opportunity to visit her "Swedish brother" in Sweden dur...

Re: Thoughts on LBVs
the best value port on the market today, IMO For ruby Port, sure, but not for all Port. For me, it is very hard to beat the value of a 10 Year Old White Port. They usually cost no more (and often less) than an LBV and I, at least, typically prefer them head-to-head. Sometimes producers even make 10...

Re: Festive Drinking 2023
A little late but I shared a couple of bottles of the Quevedo "Oscar's Blend" with friends on New year's eve with a bottle of 2000 Graham to follow. Both options went down very well with my friends although I forgot to take notes of the Graham - other than briefly noting that it's deliciou...
