Re: 1994s, Tue 26 Mar 2024
On the extreme off-chance that I can fly to London for this (I'm probably going to be in London around June 8-9 of 2024, so twice in one year might be pushing it), please put me on the reserve list. I have many of the '94's already listed but I also have a Burmester and a Quinta Do Crasto, which are...

You're going to need a damn big set of Port tongs to open that baby.

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
Thanks all for your input. You're probably right about it being a replacement covering. I'll find out for sure if it's a F'63 this September. Every year a college buddy of mine hosts a bunch of us down at his shore house. I always bring Port and we do tastings both nights. This year I'm going to do ...

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
The main unanswered question would be whether the business was still trading in 1963 - in which case an Old Reading Abbey port being F63 would be possible, or whether a forger has picked an old/defunct wine merchant and just used their name to create counterfeit bottles. Hopefully the former, but i...

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
Butler and Sons were a wine and spirits merchant with premises in Reading who used the brand "Old Reading Abbey" as a BOB (Buyer's Own Brand) for whisky in the early 1900s, and could perhaps have used it for port also. Thanks Phil. This seems like the most likely explanation then. I read ...

Re: Old Reading Abbey Brand
Anything old in a Hong Kong auction, in general beware. Never heard of such. Who was the US importer? Wine Cellars Ltd in Briarcliff Manor, NY. They look legit, but oddly their label noted it was a Fortified wine, but the abv they indicated was between 11% to 14%. Obviously an ill informed label. I...

Old Reading Abbey Brand
Has anyone ever heard of the Old Reading Abbey Brand as a Port bottler? I won a bottle of 1963 Fonseca at a Zachy's Hong Kong auction a little while back. I was going through some of my bottles today and noticed that this one had a capsule wrapper that said "Old Reading Abbey Brand". I've ...

Re: A newbie question on provenance
That's a nice list of Ports you have there. I'd recommend you try the '85 Fonseca. It's really just rounded into form over the last few years. Just make sure you give it a long decant. As far as the '03 Croft, as someone else mentioned it's still too young IMHO. Give it another 5 to 10 years and the...

Full marks for referring to the big bottles of 2016 and 2107 of Stone Terraces as tregnums. You are absolutely correct. And while there are no Tappit Hens of 2011 Stone Terraces, it does no harm to remind the world that there are three Tappit Hens of Vesuvio 2011 in the world. I just read the linke...

It was great putting names to the faces tonight. Thank you all for being so gracious and putting up with a Port newbie. Listening to you all talk, your knowledge is extensive and impressive. My apologies for butchering some of the names of the Port. I'll learn...eventually. Thanks all.

Re: 1985 Fonseca
I've always had this wine, the 1987 Vargellas, and the 1985 Graham as my top 3 from the 1980s. It's a fabulous wine and will likely out-live all of us. I'd swap the '83 Graham's for the '85 Graham's, but you can't go wrong with either. I'd also throw the '86 Graham's Malvedos into the mix. I'd rank...

Re: The 1980s & quality
The '86 Graham's Malvedos is one of the best Ports from the '80's. Not the best, but certainly in the Top 5 IMHO. The '83 & '85 Offley Boa Vista are very solid Ports.

Re: NV Quady Starboard Batch 88
I just came across a small stock of this at a B&M in South Jersey. Halves were going for $14 and a 750ML bottle was $28. I opted to buy a '97 Smith Woodhouse there instead. By the looks of the bottle it doesn't look like they had budged for a good 15 or 20 years, so it will be there if I swing b...
