Re: Mon 24th April - Bring a Bottle

JDaw did recommend I post here to the forum, but I don't think I could handle such a big night out on this trip. As it stands, I am in the London area just prior to this tasting. I wish you all a wonderful tasting (which, by that line up, you will certainly have), and if anyone should want to meet u...

Re: selling vintage ports

If you post in the Port & Madeira Marketplace I will make sure that the posting is approved for you. (You will need to create an account if you don't already have one, and FTLOP requires the use of real names rather than handles.) I second Glenn's suggestion, as FTLOP has a larger group of west...

Re: A cork pusher

Thinking about Uncle Tom's comments, and the ideas about solid rods, and that post with a picture of a thick but hollow nut.... We need an alternative to the Durand. Instead of an Ah-So that the screw goes down through, we need a tube just slightly smaller than the diameter of the bottle that sticks...

This risk is not denied. Surely the inventor of the Port garrotte can suggest better.
Oh you know I am thinking about it :)

Re: A cork pusher

How did I miss this thread? Fabulous idea (push in a little before using a screw pull) -- I keep nearly all of my empties, and will have to do some measuring/testing. One concern is that a soft cork will compress significantly, and long before the stuck part releases. It may also be difficult to red...

Oh! and I thoroughly recommend exploring the fingerlakes; be sure to stop by Konstantin Frank, Weimer, and Anthony Road. I'm actually headed up there in the coming months, and hope to have some additional recommendations.

Re: Hello from London

Hi Jo, there are a few of us here in western NJ, but that remains about a 6hr haul from pittsburgh. That said, should you be planning a trip out this way please let us know as it makes a good excuse for a tasting.

Wait, this is a thing? It was possible to coordinate directly with the folks in Portugal and have the wines imported to the US?

Re: 1944 Officers Army Port, advice neede please

I was also fascinated by the photos posted, and wound up lost in an article about the US mobilization through the UK in prep for D-Day. In my research I could not find any bottles with similar labeling, at most I found two old photos: - One of a group of troops drinking beer(?) in a mess hall, and w...

Re: Wine and Covid

Except that vaccines for Covid don’t prevent infection, so vaccine status not relevant when examining infections… Interesting point Mike; I hadn't appreciated that vaccines in general are intended to prevent disease and do not necessarily protect against infection (some do, some don't, apparently)....

Re: Wine and Covid

I certainly won't miss another excuse to open a bottle, but correlation is not causation. Wine tends to be more popular amongst those with higher education, and vaccines tend to be more popular amongst those with higher education. Just as likely a scenario...

Re: Decanters

Here I was minding my own business and then I came across this thread about old decanters (really nice set of decanters, Justin K). So I go onto Ebay just to look around and placed a best offer bid on a set of 7 various decanters. They'll be delivered in a week or two. You guys are dangerous! You'v...

Re: Decanters

Where do you find decanters and labels for sale in the US other than online? Pre-pandemic: Flea markets, but usually the vendor knew the value. Church vintage shops, Salvation Army, etc, where folks are just thinking "what, this old thing?" -- these have resulted in great finds. Garage sa...

Re: Decanters

Nice! I'm no expert, but at a glance I'd say the back right 3-rings-on-the-neck is likely the oldest of the lot (or modeled after an older style). I generally inspect them for signs of being hand-blown (no seam, and either a bump or a polished mark where the blowpipe separated). I too have too many ...

Re: Insane auction prices

Are these online auctions new to the UK? Or maybe there are just a lot of bored, wealthy folks bidding?
We've been doing online auctions in the US for a heck of a long time, and there was fervor at the beginning. Then the average folks learned how it worked and prices came back to normal.

Re: Wine fridges

So, I suppose i'm not a good measure for wine fridges, but... I used a small wine fridge for a while. Technically, it was a beverage fridge, but its flat shelves meant that I could alternate bottle direction for maximum density. It lasted for years, and probably still works (its gathering dust now)....

Re: Auction Prices

Over on this side of the pond I've seen a similar effect. While our auction prices were never as low as in the UK (as far as I can ever remember), the availability of information about retail prices, and the broad access to auctions online, enables bidders to quickly locate sub-retail prices in thei...

Re: Favourite corkscrews

With old bottles I now just push the cork in decant and smash the bottle in a plastic bag with a hammer. Even using a bag to get out a fork can damage making it unreadable. It also has the added advantage of being free😂 I learned an excellent trick on this forum. Rather than putting that bottle in ...
