Well, lets just say that here in the south we generally consider the people in the coastal provinces a little thrifty or even stingy. I can't imagine this was always the case because in the 17th century (which we call "de gouden eeuw" meaning "the golden century") it were those p...

Remember he's a Scotsman, so the conversation may go along the lines of "So my share is £50? So that's £40? £30 right? when do you want the £20 paid?" :D Alan :D That reputation is not limited to Scots only... You don't have expressions like "a Dutch treat" or "to go Dutch&...

Welcome JacobH! Good to greet another new member!

In addition to what was already said, is that you can often get half-bottles (375 ml) of VPs which are a obviously bit lighter on the wallet.

Question to those who regularly post on :ftlop:: is it really noticeable that this is a commercial site? In other words: do certain products seem to attract above average attention which can be attributed to e.g. being mentioned more often than other products (read: sponsor vs. non-sponsor-products)?

I serve them at cellar temperature, can be a bit cooler but don't take it down to 0K like you normally have it in the US. I like pilsner and some other blond beers best at around 4-6C (39-43F). I prefer the darker ones a little less cold, say 8-10C (46-50F). Often the brewer will advise an optimum ...

Decant +24 Tannins have mellowed slightly, other than that, not much change.

I can't say that I'm impressed with this LBV. Is it still too young or is this one as good as it gets?

1996 Vista Alegre LBV

Vista Alegre LBV 1996, bottled in 2002. "Traditional" and "unfiltered" are both to be found on the label. This port is in a dark brown (not black) bottle and has a cork. Bought for ┚¬ 14,50. I managed to snap the cork in two pieces while extracting it from the bottle. The oth...

I must say that - so far - I have had no bad experiences with BOBs produced by the Symingtons. Some of them even surpirised me. I can't say that of most of the BOBs by other shippers I've tried so far.
There's one more comparison I'm planning: a Warre's Warrior vs. Conqueror Special Reserve...

I don't remember the episode as a whole, just some specific details: - the actor Donald Pleasance and his way of speech; - wine storage (cellar??) with turned-off climate control in very hot weather to make sure tied-up half-brother dies during the weekend; - spoiling all the wine in the storage in ...

Three years in a row!!! :crying: I grew up in a family that doesn't take sweet wines serious: something to turn your back on as soon as you've acquired a taste for dry wines... Vista Alegre

Yesterday I went to an off-license that happens to be very near where I live to see what ports they have for sale... I noticed a brand I hadn't heard of before: Vista Alegre by Vallegre (Quinta da Vista Alegre, Pinhão). The off-licence was selling four or five LBVs of this brand, the oldest being ...

Any old port in a storm

Today, just out of the blue, I was thinking about a Columbo-episode featuring Donald Pleasance which I saw once, maybe twice, when I was a teenager (many years ago). In that episode Pleasance played a wine connoisseur who murdered his half-brother (plot summary here) . Even though it's the only epsi...

On their own they were both very good aged tawnies, but when tasted side by side, I preferred the Conqueror over the Otima on every occasion.

I think of Heritage as adequate, especially when it comes at £5 per bottle. I may even have suggested that it was better than the Warrior but it could have been an adrenaline rush caused by having a drinkable ruby for a fiver. The Heritage sells for ┚¬7 and the Warrior for ┚¬9 over here. I'...
