1996 Quinta do Portal LBV

http://www.bn-image.com/images/bn/100/119885.jpg I normally prefer LBVs to be young and powerful, with a few exceptions - and this LBV is a good example of such an exception. Decanted and drunk right away. Colour faded to brownish red. Nose and taste full of raisins and plum. Alcohol well integrate...

Re: NV Portal 20 Year Old Tawny

It lacks acid. It gets fat and sweet without the much needed acid to balance it. Compared to e.g. the Sandeman 20 year old tawny, this simply doesn't have the structure to be very intersting.

2000 Croft LBV

Bottled 2006 First glass drunk directly after opening. No decanting. Nose Barely any fuit. Showing too much alcohol. Body Very little fruit. Thin. Not very pleasant. Finish It burns way too much. Short. Overall impression Thin and burning. Little fruit but lots of alcohol. One glass was more than en...

1998 Rozes VP

Pleasing and smooth, showing few tannins. A bit of alcohol in the finish which actually wasn't too bad. It didn't seem to have closed down. It's priced in the LBV price range and fits nicely there. I think it has a good QPR and could be used for everyday drinking. Would I buy it again? Perhaps. Quaf...

Re: 2001 Borges LBV

It's unfiltered by the way and already showing significant sediment. Pricing is in the upper segment.

I'm just finishing the bottle now and it's not too bad, although the alcohol is still burning tongue and throat a bit.

Would I buy it again? No. Would I drink it again? Yes.

2001 Borges LBV

No decanting. It's subtle and smooth and doesn't really point in any particular direction with alcohol being the only thing standing out. I prefer LBVs to be powerful, an explosion in the mouth, full of fruits. This one isn't but it actually isn't too bad and not too good either. It's not overly swe...

I'm planning to share this one with some friends in a week er two. Is decanting needed, and if so for how long? Thanks.

1990 Pocas Colheita (bottled 2007)

1990 Pocas Colheita [b. 2007] Bought about a year ago for €13 (down from €20) at a local supermarket. It's boring. Too sweet both in taste and mouth feel, lacking that fine touch, alcohol showing too much, too little taste and smell of anything and lacking some much needed acid. Even at this very l...

Re: NV Chancellor 10 year old tawny

This is indeed the real deal. Chancellor is produced by Pocas, which is carried by on of the large supermarkets (Irma) in Denmark, but not the same as the supermarket that sells Pocas (Super Brugsen). This must be a marketing trick of some sort as Coop Danmark owns both Irma and Super Brugsen. It's ...

I second that. A great 20 year old tawny that's very fair in price. Great label design too.

1999 Hutcheson LBV

Okay, this one is too old for me, or even too young if you want a mature LBV. Most of the fruit has dissapeared and I like my red port young, strong and full of fruit! Even though the colour has fainted a bit it's still primarily red. The alcohol is showing too much, even after being open for some t...

Re: NV Chancellor 10 year old tawny

Unfurtunately, I don't keep drunk bottles. I'll have to look at a bottle the next time I see it in the supermarket. I can say that the label was very non-port like. Just a front label (IIRC) that was short and wide and with a "posh" font and design. If it has to look like that, I prefer th...

NV Chancellor Tawny 10YO

My local supermarket had this one on sale in December (for what used to be £8, at that time probably £12). Anyhow, it's one of the cheapest 10 year old tawnies I've seen (Kopke being among them). Price is important here as it isn't that interesting. Some of my friends really enjoyed what was left of...

Re: 2003 Graham LBV

I think this is the most boring LBV I've ever had. Too sweet, bland blend of fruit taste, too pleasing (but doesn't succeed), no structure etc. And it's not even among the cheaper ones. If I had more in my 'cellar' I would use it to make glögg. I bet the 6 grapes, which I haven't tried yet, is bett...

I really like this one. It's fairly similar to the Sandeman 20 year old tawny, which we all seem to like.

Schott Zwiesel square-stem IVdP Port tasting glass. A small glass also makes me drink less which isn't too bad as it's easy to drink too much port.

2003 Portal VP

Tasted on October 25, 2008. More details here . Having hear so many good things about this port I was a little biased before tasting it. It had to be very, very good. Unfortunately, it wasn't that good, although I much enjoyed it. I guess I missed the train and had it a couple of years too late. Dec...

Follow up on the tasting This was an excellent tasting. People really enjoyed the young and fruity wines. People were allowed to rank their preferred three ports and the outcome was: 1. 2003 Romariz VP 2. 1978 Dalva VP 3. 2003 Portal VP As you can see, a strong preference for VP over LBV. QPR wise,...

Re: Drinking old TAwny

This reminds me of an old bottle of Tawny I found in my grandmother's cellar not too long ago. It was bottled in the 60'-70'ies or so. It was called Diamond. Unfortunately I don't remember the house. Anyhow, the funny part was that the back label had the word 'diamond' spelled using phonetics :D. (...

Re: 2004 Niepoort Late bottled Vintage Port

I can second that, Michael: Last week I drank some Niepoort 2003 LBV, which I much enjoyed. Yesterday I attended the Port Wine Festival held at Børsen in Denmark. There were about 25 houses present and one of them was Niepoort. I tried the 2004 LBV and it was just so very different from most other ...

Decanting Portal and Romariz VP's now decanted. The Romariz showed no sediment, opposite to the Portal which had a thick mud-like sediment (this is only half of it) when decanted through an un-bleached coffee filter: http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6526/filtersmallil7.jpg +0 hours The Romariz is...

Re: 2003 horizontal tasting

It could be fun to taste them blind. But I'm the only person who actually know the different houses/producers by name, so it won't be that big a difference to people. And I would like to know more about the style of each house, so it would be a better education if they weren't served blind. I agree ...
