Re: Tues 24th July - Bring a bottle to share

If declaring, I declare that I will bring a glorious double magnum of Cruz 1989. Interesting. I had no prior evidence that Cz1989 had been bottled in a double-magnum. Well that would be because (a) you’ve never visited the Cruz cellars and (b) you didn’t get the big bottle rules changed until after...

Hi
If there is still space I would like to attend too.

Daniel - you would be welcome to join us and take the 14th seat. Since you'll need to travel to take part, is there a particular time in Sep-Nov which would work best for you?

Re: Cockburn Vertical, Tue 2nd Oct 2018

14 bottles for 14 people on a school night is appropriate. More is unnecessary, but desirable if rare or delicious. I would be very interested to try two bottles of 1975 Cockburn, from the same case, with the same fill level and the same weight, side by side with one having been given a long decant ...

And Cruz ‘89 has fooled many an experienced palate. It just needs the right place at the right time. But I won’t bring a bottle of Cruz ‘89. I promise.

Re: Cockburn Vertical, Tue 2nd Oct 2018

Gents, I have an option on two very old bottles that would take the cost per person from £240 to £300 including Port and tip for our friends at B&F. Food would be on top at cost. I await condition reports on the bottles in question but if they look good my intention it to include both. Neither of t...

What's happening to all the port?

I was having a chat the other day with Carlos Alves, port maker for Sogevinus since 2013, who was in London briefly this week. One of the topics we discussed was why there is so much less vintage port made and sold today, compared with 40 or 50 years ago. We agreed that beneficios had not reduced by...

NV Calem 10YO Tawny bottled 2015

Dark amber orange colour; 50% opaque. Some bruised orange on the nose with some off-putting chemical plasticiser. On the palate this is sweet, round and full of toffee. Yet the sweetness is held in check by generous apple acidity and a tobacco spiciness. A powerful aftertaste of almond and a little ...

Re: Hello, folks

Welcome Michael I've been to a few of the tutored tastings at Berry's and have enjoyed them all. They are much more formally organised than the genteel chaos that is the Port Walk. The tutored tastings tend to be seated classroom style in rows with your glasses laid out in front of you. Over the cou...

Ck63 shouldn't suffer from an 8 hour decant, provided you keep it reasonably cool.

My arrival will be delayed tomorrow night as I have a dental appointment late in the day. I should arrive between 19.00 and 19.30.

Re: Buying LBV

To Ronnie's list I would add the following LBVs which I know are bottled unfiltered and intended to be capable of ageing: - Sandeman - Ferreira - Offley - Quevedo - Quinta das Lamelas I think, but can't be certain, that Noval make both a filtered LBV and one which is intended to be able to age. Warr...

Re: Lbv vs vintage

As DRT said earlier, there are some Port producers who make LBV that is only marginally below vintage quality and which is intended to be capable of maturing and improving in the bottle for several decades - although not for as long as vintage port. Some of us on TPF have been enjoying Warre and Smi...

It’s too warm for vintage port at the moment, so I’ll bring a bottle of Noval ‘68 colheita (chilled, of course).

Welcome Nuno, it is good to see you here. I'm very interested in what you have said about making your own porto in 2016. Did you make a fortified wine from grapes grown in Tras-os-Montes? I know some producers who make fortified wines in the Alentejo, but never before from Tras-os-Montes. Please let...

1991/92 Double Horizontal

I was looking back through our offlines and we have organised tastings of most major vintages having done 1945, 1955, 1958, 1960, 1963, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1975, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1985 and 1994. (And 1997, although I wasn't there). The obvious gap is 1991/92. If I were to organise a 1991 / 1992 double...
