Re: Graham (or Malvedos) vertical, Tue 14 May 2024

I've just spoken with the B&F and there is defiantly no Bearnaise sauce available That's a real shame, they've been fine with it for a long time as long as we ordered in advance. Ah well - thanks for trying; I've updated above to have peppercorn instead. Maybe we'll persuade them to bring it ba...

Re: Taylor Single Harvest Tawny Tasting - 16 May 2024

I’ll have smoked salmon starter (with the chilli dressing on the side), and a main of slow roasted belly pork with fries instead of sweet potato mash and a side of roasted carrots.

Re: Graham (or Malvedos) vertical, Tue 14 May 2024

For this tasting I’d like Ham Hock terrine as a starter, a rib-eye medium rare with a bearnaise sauce (if possible) thin chips as the side and roasted carrots with pea pesto as a side dish.

This can also be my default food order — but the default should be no starter.

2022 Pedra Alta

Did anyone else taste the Quinta da Pedra Alta 2022 VP? I was very impressed - a proper tasting note will get posted, but I’m curious to know if anyone else tried it.

There are strong rumours that Quinta do Noval will declare a 2022 vintage, although since they haven’t done so yet, they are not on the list.

I don’t think so, but I’ll check.

It might be worth asking at the SFE stand on Tuesday.

Re: Travelling Between Quintas without a Car

My advice is the same as Andy’s.

If you have fixed times for arrival or departure, book you taxi a week ahead or so. Your host at the Quinta you’re visiting or hotel in Régua / Pinhão will be able to help you.

Ride apps haven’t arrived in the Douro yet.

I’ve just updated the list to show that according to their Instagram feeds, the Ferreira and Sandeman vintages are single Quinta wines while Offley is a full vintage blend.

Re: Happy Portday

The Port I’ve owned the longest is a bottle of Vesuvio 1989 I bought in 1994, so eight years later than Justin’s Sandeman 1966. I do recall working out of Belgrave House in Buckingham Palace Road in the 1980s, when the Lloyd’s crisis forced the Lloyd’s names to liquidate assets. Just round the corne...

Re: Porto this weekend

I’m trying to think what’s new since 2020. I stayed at the Lodge a few weeks ago. It was pleasant enough and Alexandra in the bar was keen to share what she knew and to learn more about Port. The 1756 restaurant has a good reputation, but I’ve not eaten there. I know someone who stayed a couple of n...

Re: Graham (or Malvedos) vertical, Tue 14 May 2024

I’d rather do the GMs separately, not mixed in with the Graham vertical.

I think the list Martin has proposed is based on what has been offered to him. For example, no-one has offered a bottle of 1957 nor anything older than 1955.

1982 Smith Woodhouse LBV

Bottle matured LBV, bottled in 1986 (as stated on the cork). Mature ruby red appearance, looking to be in early maturity; 50% opaque. Cherry cough drops on the nose, mixing sweet fruit with a touch of menthol. On the palate this is so impressive. Lively and light-footed, the fruit dances around the ...

Seckfords is easy to get to by train - it takes about 95 minutes from Liverpool Street. The warehouse is about a 10 minutes walk through a lovely riverside park from Melton train station. You could easily do it as quite a pleasant half day excursion. Assuming you were talking about the Bovington Tan...

W47 (JDAW) The Warre 1947 is high shoulder, bottler unknown (though it came from Alex B. , and it might be that a different bottle of the batch had a label). Was this one of the bottles from the parcel bought at Bonham's on 17 March 2009? With the white foil capsule? If so, I kept two bottles from ...
