Re: 1994 Mini Horizontal

I’m in. And I like the idea of doing it blind, or at least semi-blind.

You could get someone not attending to do the admin if you wanted to make sure there were no duplicates at the tasting.

You were lucky! The "sand" is probably cork crumbs, which is evidence of cork weevil (aka woodworm) having attached the cork. If it had got to the wine it would have given it that horrible flavour we were talking about at the Christmas offline.

2004 Taylor Vargellas

Brick red, 90% opaque. Lots of strawberry jam on the nose. Young but very approachable and surprisingly well balanced. Soft and chewy aftertaste and a great second wind on the finish. 88 14-Mar-19

2005 Taylor Terra Feita

More mature in appearance than the 2001 shown alongside; 70% opaque. Restrained and youthful on the palate with the tannins swamping the fruit. Dry and unbalanced, but with a great freshness from the acidity. One day, this will be a lovely wine. 91 14-Mar-19

2001 Taylor Terra Feita

Deep rose red colour, 90% opaque. Lovely fruit on the nose. Soft entry with alpine strawberry and orange blossom. Big tannins, but ripe and sweet giving great grip. Tannins give a wonderful aftertaste and a nice chocolate and cherry finish. 89 14-Mar-19

NV Taylor First Estate

This represented a very interesting opportunity to compare and contrast the NV Croft Finest Reserve (and Triple Crown) against the Taylor First Estate. The Croft is sweet, rounded and full of lush fruit. The Taylor is much more structured and austere, with the fruit being steely and full of minerali...

1980 Fonseca

One of the few bottles of Vintage Port I have ever poured down the sink. Slightly better after leaving in the decanter overnight, but not good. Full of VA, sharp and acidic on the palate. Not pleasant. NR 14-Mar-19 2019 39 1 hour

NV Croft 430th Anniversary

Deep red, nicely balanced between maturity and youth; 90% opaque. Very attractive gentle nose of sweet bramble fruit. Nicely balanced on the palate with generous sweet fruit, and tannins which appear with a bit of work. Sweet fruit on the finish. This is enjoyable, easy to drink and finishes with pa...

NV Croft Triple Crown

A reserve ruby from Croft. Soft red colour with more pigment than the finest reserve; 50% opaque. Subdued nose, soft entry with sweet red fruit that brings some slightly stewed bramble. Nicely structured on the palate bringing a spicy edge to the fruit on the aftertaste and a lovely, good length fin...

NV Croft Fine Ruby

Soft ruby colour; 40% opaque. Gentle red fruit on the nose, slightly stewed to give sweetness and complexity. On the palate there are gentle tannins with strawberry and sweet bramble. Gentle flavoured finish. A nicely structured Ruby Port, full of sweet luch fruit that makes it easy to drink. 83 14-...

2004 Croft LBV

One of the Tesco half bottles; bottled 2009. Decanted off a surprising amount of sediment. Deep red in colour, looking to be in early maturity; opaque. Almost nothing on the nose, but it has just come out of the cellar. Modest fruit on the palate on entry, but the fruit builds up nicely. Green tanni...

1994 Croft

Brick red and opaque from the fine sediment in the wine. A little baked fruit on the nose, but surprisingly restrained. Similarly restrained on the palate with little showing on entry. The mid-palate is better and with work reveals sweet fruit and dry tannins that combine well on the lingering finis...

Thu 19th December 2019 - the Port Forum Christmas Bash

I'd like to propose Thursday 19th of December as the date of our 2019 Port Forum Christmas extravaganza. (This ties in with my Ipswich team Christmas lunch so puts me in the right place at the right time.) I haven't asked Tom yet, but I am hoping that he will kindly agree to host the Christmas offli...

I think w/c 10 Jun might also work. Depends when you're in Portugal.

Please could the organiser update the top page with the attendees who now can / can't make the new date and provide instructions on what Ports should be brought by attendees?

Re: Do we need a 1966 Horizontal?

Early June would be good for me, otherwise suggest going for late Sep when it might be cooling down again? Late September wouldn't work for me. Early June might be cramming too much into the six weeks from 1 May to 17 June. I'd prefer October or November - now it's up to the organiser to choose a d...

Re: Do we need a 1966 Horizontal?

I would suggest not May. We have the Broadbent tasting on 1 May. 23 May is Victoria's 200th tasting. 27 May is the Bank Holiday and half term week (which might be difficult for some and easy for others). July? August? November? We have nothing in any of these months yet, but have the Messias tasting...

Re: Vintage port terrible teens?

The 1994 vintage is well out of its terrible teens. Although it might well be better in 10 or 20 years, they are absolutely delicious today.
