Re: 2022 Declarations
There are strong rumours that Quinta do Noval will declare a 2022 vintage, although since they haven’t done so yet, they are not on the list. They generally release every year, unless a really bad year, so not a surprise if they do. Having a Quinta with lower and upper elevations and different sun ...

Re: Travelling Between Quintas without a Car
Unless it’s changed recently, Ride share/Uber type doesn’t exist as far as I know in Regua/Pinhao. I would book taxis ahead of time. Summertime can be very busy because the river boat people (which I can’t stand) inundate pinhao at various times and taxis become very hard to get (it’s a tiny town wi...

IMG_6905.jpeg Croft 1977, decanted 4.5 hours. This is a Port in a lovely place at the moment. Glowing, polished ruby in colour and so expressive on the nose! The nose brings sweet cherry fruit, layered with mace and allspice, and so much more. Tobacco, aniseed and dried cranberry on the palate - br...

Newer style Selo, post early 1970’s. Capsule looks like the ones used ~’77-ish to ~’80s. Or it’s older and was just labeled and released later. Either way, very good customer service from GN. .

Re: Mould under foil/on top of cork
Nothing to worry about. Just wipe off with a wet towel or cloth. You may need to wipe away any remaining bits on the very top of the bottle once the cork is removed.
Then enjoy knowing it’s a very well stored bottle!

Hi David, Many thanks for taking time out of your busy day and chiming in with your experience and expertise. We may be pros at drinking port but we’re just arm-chair winemakers, hah! I, and I’m quite positive all the others, look forward to learning more from you. I know this is a general question ...

Re: Is 30yo VP darker than it used to be?
A guess, to which I am probably wrong and if so please say so. I'd theorize it is due to block planting and the reduced use of the old field blends. The latter of which contained white grapes and all sorts of different types of red grapes not necessarily picked at their peak of ripeness. With block ...

It would have been bottled, or at least labeled, around the mid/late 1990’s.

Re: Thoughts on LBVs
Unfiltered LBV’s can be very delicious and can generally age nicely for a couple decades. I do find they tend to start losing their luster after about 20-25 yrs. They’re still good but they tend not to have the complexity to carry them into very old age. Of course there are exceptions, I’m speaking ...

Your welcome. Don’t be afraid to give it a good long decant and don’t serve too cold. Cellar temp is perfect. Please post your thoughts on it when you open yours. I’d love to read your thoughts on it.MigSU wrote:I've been meaning to try it. This sounds encouraging. Thanks for sharing, Andy.

2020 Quinta da Fonte Souto Taifa Branco
This is the debut vintage of this limited production "ultra" white from the property. Whereas the previous flagship white was about 75% Arinto and about 25% Verdelho, this wine is 100% Arinto aged for 11 months in 100% new Hungarian and French oak barrels and then aged for an additional tw...

Re: Vintage at last??
So.. not a great year by the sounds of it. Now the vintage is wrapped up, is it looking like a poor, bad or terrible one? From what I gather (no pun intended), grapes picked before the main rains that came were very good. What came after the rain, not so much. That generally means some producers wi...

Re: Bottles you never want to open
Anything is fair game to open, in the right setting. That said, the bit of really old wines I have are being opened pretty sparsely at this point as they are impossible to replace or the cost now is so high not worth it. But I plan to open most of mine before I die, I hope. My spouse loves wine but ...
