Re: Too hot to drink Port

Andy has the right idea...chill your port. Easy to drink in the summer. A tawny or colheita, especially. These are incredible when chilled. Get a wine cooler. Some smaller versions, like 10-12 bottle holder, can be had for about $100. That, or rest the bottle atop a bed of ice for an hour or two. Do...

Father's Day Port

Father's Day is this Sunday. What port are you going to give your Dad? What port do you hope to receive, as Dad? Me, being a father of two small and very active boys, I want peace and quiet. But will settle for a nice, chilled, Dow 82 Colheita. BTW, my Dad lives in another country and I can't ship t...

2003 Taylor Fladgate LBV

Pleasant enough aroma. Mixed fruits. Some candy. Really dark purple color. First sip, fruity and tons of licorice. Not a fan of licorice but I tasted it through and through. Kind of overwhelming. A bit of spice on the end. I dunno, this LBV feels too dominant on the licorice. If you're a fan, go for...

Closet treasures. Really?

I originally posted this on WS forum... Now and then, we're asked by someone on our site to divulge the approximate value of an old bottle of port found in a closet. Or garage. Or safe deposit box. Usually, the query goes like this: "I found an old bottle of old Salty Dog Port in my recently d...

1998 Graham's Malvedos

Better than I thought it would be. Aroma not too powerful but decent. Light fruit. Cherry-like. Dark red/purple color. First sip, my head nods...for a moment. Has the fuit (currants, plums) and sweetness downpat, but the end lets up a bit. Not really a long lasting port. Higher than the 87 points it...

2007 Graham's vintage

All I can say is "Wow." Got a chance to sample this one again along with a few others at a tasting last night. Here's the lowdown. Very aromatic. Potent. Reminds me of plums. Intense flavor of grapes mixed with dark fruits. Powerful. Wow factor from beginning to end. Doesn't let up. Sweet,...

Hmn...I think Graham's 10 yr is actually one of the best aged 10 yrs out there. I prefer it over Dow for sure. Taylor's comes close.

Hmn...I liked the 2001 LBV. It also left something to be desired though but still a pretty good LBV. Might have to try this one and compare.

NV Croft Pink

This is a new item for us. Quite some hoopla not long ago, we added it to see the response. Color is light pink. Looks like Kool-aid. First sip, it is kool-aid! Gives off a cherry flavor that reminds me of cough syrup. While somewhat smooth, it doesn't feel like a port. Too light a pour. Aroma lacks...

You know, the wine aerator.

Works well with red wines but never tried it on port.

Favorite low to mid-priced vintage - what's yours?

Those vintage ports you can get for less than $60 on 750mls...

Mine are (to name a few):

Smith Woodhouse Madelena 1995. Beautiful port all around.
Quinta de Roriz 1999 - we can't get this anymore. Sob.
Fonseca de Panascal 2001 - fruity and very sweet

Anyone have others?

Re: Dow's 2007 Vintage - 100 PTS Wine Spectator

Man, news like this made everyone's head spin. We sold out suddenly last weekend, so did my distributor. I had to fight, kick, and claw to get three of the last six cases. ETA on new arrivals? No firm answer. Even the 375mls are closely guarded. Funny though, Graham's 2007 was 99 points and I don't ...

Yes, we are an online retailer - based in Orange County, California. We've been in the wine business for almost 4 years now, seen the highs and lows of the wine trade. While we specialize in port wine and madeira, but have dabbled in Spanish Sherry, other assorted dessert wines, even introduced some...

Cost Plus World Markets used to have a decent set of glasses. For about $6 per. It's been awhile since I was there though.
