Re: We need some tastings in the diary

Apr - Bring a bottle to share with Derek's new Knees Given the theme, perhaps similar yet slightly different "pairs" of bottles would be appropriate? There are several ways I can think of immediately as possibilities, such as: vintage/vintage from same shipper and year with different blends (e.g. T...

Re: Thu 15 Feb 2018: Mr. Wolfgang Stars

There is the tiniest of tiny chances that I might be able to attend, though it's not likely right now. However, even if not present I will most definitely toast the event remotely, and am very happy that Wolfgang will continue to be with us. PS. Do you let everyone pass these days? How much more ger...

Re: Cavendish vintage 1949 vin de liqueur

If this is what I think it is (please post a photo if you want us to verify) then this is port-like wine from South Africa, and is a 30yr tawny-style wine. If so then it will probably have been bottled in 1979, and while intended for immediate drinking at that time, should still be drinkable now as ...

Re: 1927 Warre

Full, dark; a touch dry mid-palate, lovely flavour, some dry tabacco, slight acidity on aftertaste. A good port, but overshadowed by its company. Also a wine which had been on my "unicorn list" (wines I would love to try, but thought I might never get the chance to), so very pleased to have had the ...

Dark and fabulous, deep, spicy; classic Taylor profile. In exceptionally good condition, though for me bettered significantly by the Fonseca, and very slightly by the Martinez, probably due to my flavour profile preferences.

My notes simply say "wow, wow, wow - full, dark, Fonseca profile, delicious". This was an absolutely fabulous wine, and in excellent condition.
Superb, and as good as pretty much any other port I have tasted.

Re: 1927 Dow

Immediately post-decant this had good flavour, slight acid on finish; fell apart very quickly. I suspect Alex's note may reflect the wine at 30mins+, at which point what started out as good flavour has disappeared behind the bitterness and heat that appeared. Rating: ex- immediately post-decant, but...

Slight toffee on noise; medium body on taste with toffee edge; still very enjoyable, though not as good as previously when this has been a superstar.

Massively faulty bottle. Strong smell of antiseptic; didn't really want to taste but did, and wished I hadn't.

Re: We need some tastings in the diary

The first of my knee replacements has gone very well. Only four weeks in I can stand on that leg without wincing, and have walked 10km in each of the last 14 days. That really is excellent, great to hear; hoping the other will go as smoothly too. I'm still not going to watch Strictly though, I'll h...

Re: We need some tastings in the diary

Depending how full a vertical you are considering, you might ideally need more time to organise. From a personal standpoint, I would love to attend a significant Warre vertical, though there would be some uncertainty for the next couple of months so if it were to happen I would selfishly prefer it t...

Does anyone remember whether this was from a Bordeaux bottle or from a pota bottle?
Neither - it was from a Niepoort tall bottle, per below (1) Bordeaux, (2) Niepoort tall.

Re: Christmas wine and port

Xmas2017.jpg I received a most excellent and unexpected present of a pair of port tongs, so this morning used them to open the traditional Christmas Croft '70, and an unknown '63 with neck tag that said "Taylor's '63" on one side, and "Graham '70" on the other - which turned out to be Taylor's '63....

1991 Warre

Just starting to enter its primary drinking window now; still dark, but age appearing on the rim colour, soft red cherries and vanilla on the taste; good length.

Noticeably smoother and better integrated at D+24hr (at D+4hr had been slightly disjointed).

Definitely up for steak here, of course :) Starters would be nice, but only if non-stressful to include; perhaps smoked salmon, welsh rarebit or just some mixed nibbles like salted roasted almonds?
