1982 Croft

26/04/09 Signs of leakage. Cork soft and wet throughout, but came out smoothly in one piece. Tiny amount of sediment. Decant +3: Pale light red-brown in colour, like tea. Almost pink at the rim. Nose of strawberries and marzipan. On the palette again strawberries, black cherries and some orangepeel....

Croft 1975 (2x)
Croft 1977 (3x)
Croft 1982 (4x)

My wee wine fridge is full already, so I'll have to officially open my new wine cellar for these bottles
(the crawling space beneath my house  ).

Re: 1984 Kopke Porto Colheita

Hi TBird,
Can you remember what year of bottling this was?
Today I bought two of these (sale: 2nd bottle half price!) and noticed they had a 2005 and a 2008 bottling.
For the sake of comparison I should have bought one of each (didn't think of that in the shop), but bought two 2008 bottlings.
Thanks.

Re: Crusted ports from the nineties

So far I've only had the Churchill 2002 (which I found rather disappointing) and the Dow's 1997 (which I found enjoyable with loads of distinctive fruits).
I do have a Taylor's 1974 tucked away though.

Re: 1988 Gould Campbell LBV

Do you think that the very good impression you had of this wine was because of the extra bottle age that the port had before you drank it? That's difficult to say since I never had a Gould Campbell LBV before or since, but this was certainly the oldest LBV I ever had. To my taste it had more sweet ...

2001 Churchill LBV

Unfiltered. decanted +1: Closed nose. Remarkably dry on first taste. Apple and cherries on the palette. Figs and mineral in aftertaste. Reasonably long aftertaste. Medium to light body. Tannins present. This clearly needs more decanting time and I'm curious to what it will taste like in a couple of ...

2002 Churchill crusted

decant +3 : Quite a large amount of lumpy sediment. Opaque with dark red rim. Interesting nose of raspberry, orange and freshly cut hay. Medium sweet and fleshy in the mouth but with a rather dull palette of overripe cherries and a hint of marzipan. Not much depth there. Reasonably long aftertaste ...

1988 Gould Campbell LBV

Part of a mixed lot bought at a wine auction. Bottled in 1994. Unfiltered. decant +2: Although the label indicated nothing and this bottle had a T-stopper, this LBV was clearly unfiltered: a small solid cake of sediment against the side of the bottle. Very dark red colour, but not opaque. Attractive...

2003 Krohn LBV

Bottled in 2007. Unfiltered. decant +1: Almost unnoticeable amount of dust-like sediment. Opaque with very dark red rim. Pleasant nose of mainly cherries, orange juice and some nettle. Full bodied and fleshy in the mouth with a palette mainly existing of cherries and some dark chocolate. Lengthy aft...

1995 Krohn

Decanted 2,5 hours. Reasonable amount of fine sediment. Dark red-brown colour. Fabulous nose of raisins, dried figs, dried apricot but also some fresh tones of plums. The nose is so lovely that you almost forget this liquid is also made for drinking. All the mentioned tones come back on the palette ...

Bottled by Sogevinus - Fine Wines, S.A. Bottled in 2008. Filtered. Colour dark purple-red. A nose of mainly raspberry, cherries and some dark chocolate. A lot of alcohol in the mouth. On the palette again a lot of raspberry, cherries, dark chocolate and some peach. A reasonable lengthy aftertaste. S...

NV Merchant Vintners Company Ltd - Finest Ruby Port

Bottled by Fonseca Guimaraens. Part of a mixed lot bought at a wine auction. T-cork. Poured straight from the bottle. Surprisingly enough this bottle throws a small amount of granular sediment. There is no way of telling the age of this 'Finest Ruby', but the presence of a bar-code on the back label...

decant +0: Fair amount of lumpy sediment. Opaque with brick red rim. A fresh, youthfull, fruity nose but not very complex with mainly redcurrant, some tomato and nutmeg. Quite acidic in the mouth and a sweetness below average. On the palette cherries, fresh fig and a bit mineral. An avertaste that ...

NV Romariz Reserve (organic)

Label advices decanting because 'this Port is not pasteurised or refridgerated'. Label doesn't make clear if it's filtered or not. No sediment on decanting. decant +0: Very dark cherry-red colour. Light nose of cherry, apple and a hint of apricot and lemon. Dry on the palette with lots of apple and ...

Sadly I can't view the image you posted ( "file does not excist" ). For what it's worth: G.Verlinden&Zoon N.V sHertogenbosch is called Wijn Verlinden these days. From their online shopping page they only seem to carry port by the name of Hutchesons. http://www.wijnverlinden.nl/Menu/bes...

Michael,
When they reply, I would be quite interested to know what the shipping costs are, as I take it shipping to Germany wouldn't be much different than shipping to The Netherlands.
Thanks.
