Re: Historical Perspective - Cockburn Vintage Ports from 1863 to

Thanks for posting, John. Is there an online resource where you can access these back volumes of the Journal? Not that I know of. I own a bunch of them because I collect them, being on the board of governors. I need to look through them more often, as I tend to buy them when I find them but then do...

Historical Perspective - Cockburn Vintage Ports from 1863 to

I recently found an article in the August 1982 issue of The Journal of the International Wine & Food Society titled Cockburn Vintage Ports 1863-1975. I found this article pretty interesting for a couple of reasons. First, it gives some thoughts about the various vintages that we might not hear t...

Great idea Tom. It would be good to do it in 2011 or 2012 as the 20th anniversary of one of the two vintages.

Re: Is '92 the most over-hyped vintage?

I find it kind of interesting that one clearly bad bottle of Fonseca is leading a host of people to conclude that the 1992 vintage was over-hyped. It sounds like there's a general concensus that Vesuvio is not good. There was a mention of Passadouro, however my experience is that this wine struggles...

Re: Is '92 the most over-hyped vintage?

Just seeing this thread now, and wondering if there is anything people would like to add. My experience w/ 1992 is fairly limited (Vesuvio, Fonseca, and Niepoort), but it is fairly 'meh' to my palate, with the Niepoort showing much better than the other two, but not close to its 1994 or even 2003. ...

1985 Warre

This evening I opened a 1985 Warre on the spur of the moment, but I was able to give it 3 hours in the decanter. This is the second of three bottles I bought at one time. This one, like the last a couple of years ago, showed a wine that's fully mature and actually in a state of decline. The color wa...

Congratulations Julian to you and your entire family! My wife and I have toasted you all with the 1977 Warre, which was great in every respect. Here's hoping that 2009 will be a great vintage year for those birth year wines you'll lay away for little Maximillian.

Julian,

What fabulous news! I hope all goes well today for your wife, and for you of course. A 1977 Warre has just been decanted and is waiting in the wings.

Best of luck,
John

I've had this wine many times and never encountered the minty notes nor the browning. Sounds like a bad bottle.

1985 Taylor Vintage Port

I had this wine yesterday at a friend's house. He had purchased it upon release and kept it in an excellent passive cellar. It was decanted 3 hours prior to service. The wine was dark red with no evidence of browning, but I expect was losing color as Taylor is usually a pretty black wine when young....

1963 Offley

I opened a bottle of this wine yesterday, in preparation for a dinner at a friend's house. I double decanted it (poured into decanter, cleaned out bottle, returned it to the bottle for transportation) about 6 hours before it was served. The fill had been base neck. The wine, in a word, was tremendou...

Re: 1927 Taylor (originally a mystery bottle)

Sounds like a bad bottle. The 27 Taylor I had 2 years ago was fabulous, still medium red with some browning. Very balanced tannins and alcohol. It opened up in the decanter and you would have thought it was a 1963, it was that fresh. I've seen other notes about the 27 Taylor that are consistent with...

Re: Type of glass

I use a white wine glass typically. It makes me crazy when restaurants or some people pull out these little glass "thimbles" for port. I don't know anyone that only drinks about 2 ounces of port, and you certainly can't swirl the wine it them.

Re: Stay Me With Flagons: Corrections and Comments

Maurice Healy was a close personal friend of Andre Simon and many other of the "movers and shakers" in the English wine business of the 1930s and 1940s. A lawyer by trade, most of his interest in wine was driven by his association with both Andre Simon and AJA Symons, the primary founders ...
