Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame

Skeffington 2017 sample at Uncorked tasting. No back-up. Lightly corked but even so, still happening no matter what the cork producers are saying they have done to improve things :-( That is depressing, although it is possible the cask samples have been closed with different (cheaper) corks to the ...

Re: Martinez 1955 & Graham’s 1988 advice please

Firstly, it would be a good idea to read our standard advice for selling Port . As for your bottles, the Graham's Late Bottled Vintage 1988 has no real value - perhaps £10? - as it is not a style that should be stored for the length of time it has been as will really just be of academic interest to ...

Re: Your picks when searching out value in the context of 16/17 pricing?

time to re-consider the relative value of back vintages? I haven't checked out the other vintages you mention, Nick, but would suggest that top-end 1985s are fantastic value at the moment. Taylor 85 is widely available at £300 for 6 IB. The 2017 is £325. Graham, Fonseca & Warre all tell the same st...

Re: Third time is the charm - History in the making

I think it is very difficult to reconcile that traditional practice with today's population of Port producers as 80% of them are single quintas so are likely to produce a VP in almost every year. We are therefore left with a small group of companies who make a different wine in great years to deter...

Re: Third time is the charm - History in the making

I suspect that the concept of a general declaration came into being amongst the British houses in the mid nineteenth century. There were many more of them then than there are today and it is likely that at least some of the decision making would have taken place informally over lunch at the Factory ...

Re: Seeking input on bottle of 1927 vintage Port

The picture on vivino certainly seems to validate the style of label but as Andy said earlier the main problem with this bottle is the fill level.

EJINPA, as others have said I think you would be well advised to use this as a ticket to a tasting ;-)

Other than 'my glass is empty' what are the other standard justifications employed by TPF-ites for opening a bottle of port for one?
I only open bottles of VP for one if the day has a "y" in it.

Re: Two Vintage Bottles - The Chairman's and Porto Adriano Ramos-Pinto

I'm surprised the pinto is that low. I've seen online stores just now with places selling it for £50 - £85. Winedecider states that the average is £59 for the 1985. I'm not saying you are wrong or anything, just curious why you value it lower, have you seen it sell for that recently? I think you mi...

Have the frequency of vintage declarations increased over the recent decades? If so, what is the cause? Better technology and more efficient methods? Or am I suffering from recency bias?
What Glenn and Andy said, and don't expect a 2018 or 2019 declaration

I’m democratically declaring it to be “Port fit for a Queen”.
Which, in my case, will be Warre 1966.

Re: Fonseca 1970 vintage port

Hi, Fonseca 1970 is a wonderful Port so the gift from your grandparents was very special. The current retail price for a bottle with very good provenance would be around £180. At auction it would be significantly less and in a private sale perhaps a bit more than half of that amount. The good news i...

Tasting notes: Niepoort Vintage 2017 Julian: Red purple, as opaque as young Port. Nose dominated by red grape, with prune and plum. Also something exotic. I thought pineapple, but not quite that. Palate is sweet and approachable, large but not gigantic, deliciously balanced. And stuffed hard with ra...
