Re: Large bottle sizes: a campaign

equality I did not campaign for equality. I want there to be both double-magnums and imperials, and former had better know that they are junior to the latter. perhaps I should have specified that I meant Portuguese wine makers should have the same bottling freedoms as their counterparts in France, ...

what a silly thread!

Ahh the virtues of half bottles! among others... 1. less impact from TCA/Spoilage/etc (one $100 750ml bottle of corked wine < two $50 375ml bottles of wine, of which one is corked) 2. more chances to diversify your cellar (explore regions, producers, take gambles, etc) 3. more accessible young (pls ...

Praise be to jdaw1

I don't know how it is possible that I could have been so fabulously unaware of the IVDP's curious stance on bottle formats, nor of Jdaw's heroic/historic campaign to restore sanity, pride, equality, and ballerdom to Portugal. To save you chaps any suspense, size matters. And although I consider a 3...

Re: Dow's 2007 vs 2011

I haven't had either in a while, but the 07 Dow did not impress me within the context of a very good but not great vintage (the Noval is my only 'must own'), then there are 3-4 wines, then the Dow. 2011 is a stronger vintage, and Dow's relative position exceeds that of the '07. The wine just has mor...

Thirsty Third Thursdays: 1987 Faiveley

Thirsty Third Thursdays: 1987 Faiveley Terroir Tutorial A group of ten gathered at Il Gattopardo on Thursday, September 18th 2014 to enjoy a fairly comprehensive tasting of Domaine Faiveley's 1987 harvest. I have enjoyed Faiveley's reds for some time, and it was great luck to secure so many pristine...

Re: Mon 16 June 2014, The Bung Hole: 1997 Maturity Evaluatio

I did several small comparisons lately with 94 and 97 I always found the 97s to have more grip and be the more interesting Port. You were missed Axel, and based on your comments I would have loved to hear your impressions from this tasting, as I am not sure I found grip on any of the wines (the clo...

Ok - while I appreciate that this has turned into a measuring contest of 1970 stocks, the fact remains that this is the most consistently enjoyable vintage since..... and remains readily available / affordable in major markets. If everyone brings one (two?) bottle(s) to share, I promise we'll have a...

Re: Mon 16 June 2014, The Bung Hole: 1997 Maturity Evaluatio

Feel very fortunate to have been summoned to London for the 1997 tasting (errr....work). The highlight was the conversation / new faces, as the wines themselves have not especially encouraged me to add to my fairly meager allocations of this particular vintage. While certain wines were showing more ...

Re: The 2014 Harvest

I'd be very surprised if 2014 is *NOT* declared. I guess that means they won't be declaring 2015 (and usually they seem to like factors of 5), but I sense a declaration in the air. Low yields would certainly help make their case to the market that this requires attention in lieu / addition to 2011 (...

The evening commenced with some outstanding negotiation by Chris with the Maitre d', which went something like this [...] One meaningful detail you neglected, Flash, is that her opening salvo was to inform me that there was a $50 per bottle corkage fee! Of course, I reminded her that Aureole (which...

Re: Port for sale at auction

I participated in an online auction that concluded this weekend, and am taking home 20 bottles of 1986 Gm ($27 per, all in) and 12 of 1985 G ($53 all in).

Feeling pretty good about the execution. Love both these wines and always looking to add at agreeable prices.

Nacional 1991 - no notes, fellas?!

Anyone interested in sharing experiences with this wine? Couldn't find any TNs on the forum, and CT is slim pickings. I've yet to be wowed by NN, some are great, but none I've had are worth a half case of Dow 70. This one is for sale for a 'mere' 400, and wanted to see if that is remotely justified ...

Due to the amazing (and frankly, surprising) devotion of my port chums Hmmm. I suspect this is an example of the difference between our respective cultures.
