Re: Thu 14th March 2019, Broadbent Port, at the B&F

Theme: Broadbent , he supplying 2000, ’03, ’07, ’11, ’15. Perhaps from us also 1994 and 1997 (which would be complete); and, numbers permitting, a second course of older Ports from our cellars. Do you have any guidance to give as to the theme for the second course? Should we all bring an extra bott...

Thanks Tom. It's always interesting to read your thoughts on the way different years compare with each other and the logic you've applied when making changes to the years.

Re: Dow's Christmas port?

It's a basic ruby port which was (is?) sold in UK supermarkets at a particular time of year. It's a little cruel to describe this as a "basic" ruby port although absolutely technically correct. This is a port from specially selected lotes that are blended together to make a ruby port that has tones...

Mike out, Tony in.

I'm also bringing a guest who (I think) has been once before. TS, right handed.

Julian - would you be kind enough to make the placemats and I will print them on Monday.

1997 Warre

Available by the glass or bottle from the Port Gaverne Hotel in North Cornwall. Sweet slightly herby fruit on the nose. Lots of sweet strawberry jam on the palate with tannins that are almost fully integrated. Modest levels of acidity means this particular wine lacks the usual elegance of Warre. Som...

2016 The Liberator Episode 9 Revisited

This is a Calitzdorp (South Africa) based Cape Vintage wine from Boplaas, fortified to 18%. See this link for more details. Hints of magenta on the rim; looking to be in late babyhood. Herbs and fruit on the nose; fresh fruit that is sweet and ripe. Amazingly light and spritely on the palate with sw...

Re: Tue 30th October

We have the Red Room so can accommodate 14 people if anyone else wants to come along or bring a guest. I have a favour to ask. Earlier this week I discovered that I have never tasted the Graham 1997. If anyone coming on the 30th has a bottle that they could bring, I would be most grateful...but plea...

Is there any interest in dinner after the Port Walk? It looks like there are 5 people from TPF who will be attending: AHB JDAW DRL CPR MPM DRL has confirmed no dinner. AHB and MPM have confirmed they would be interested in dinner. Are people happy to go to one of the Clubs round the corner from BBR?

1994 Taylor

The current offer by the glass at the Oxford & Cambridge Club, offered @ £9 for a 100ml pour. Deep brick red colour with a wide transparent rim. Complex on the nose with sweet red fruit, mixing sweet alpine strawberry with green bay leaves. Less pronounced on the nose than some 1994 vintage ports, b...

Re: The Book, ‘Port Vintages’, is for sale

I've just listened to the esteemed author on The UK Wine Show ThirtyFifty podcast where he talks about vintage port. Very entertaining and well worth a listen. There's also a follow up podcast which I haven't listened to yet, where he talks about The Book. Both very good, very well worth a listen. ...

1994 Graham

The Boot & Flogger has greatly expanded its list of Ports available by the glass due to a purchase of a Coravin. The list now comprises Graham 1994, Taylor 1997 and Dow from 1980, 1985 and 1994. This Graham 1994 was £18 for a 100ml glass. Mature red colour about 90% opaque. A wonderful smell pouring...

I have a bottle of the Bb94 I would happily contribute to the line up (assuming I have a place at the table, of course). I'll need a little notice as it's stored offsite.

Re: Tue 30th October

I have a room booked for 8 people - but I'm not certain whether this is the Green Room or the upstairs private room (or, indeed, a table in the ovens or elsewhere).

If more than 8 people want to attend I will start a waiting list and enquire whether the green room is available.

We appear to have nothing in the diary now until our Offley vertical on 11th December. Is this too long to go without drinking Port? "Of course not!" I hear you cry. "We're all abstaining until Christmas." Well I'm not! Work brings me to London on Tuesday 30th October and I plan to stay a little aft...

I don't often buy Decanter, normally browsing the articles I'm interested in at my local library. However, I did buy a copy of the November issue as the Decanter Wine Legend this month is Sandeman 1945.

2016 Warre

Opaque. Esteva nose, lightly fruity and very floral. Sweet balanced entry with round fruit that has a lovely intensity. Slightly deeper than some ports with sweet ripe fruit, round smooth blackcurrant. Nicely balanced aftertaste and a great intensely fruity finish. A very good Warre with the refined...

2016 Quinta do Vesuvio Capela

Another intense and deep wine at the tasting showing little on the nose. Less intense on the palate than the full Vesuvio blend but with much more grip and greater complexity. The tannins show up very strongly on the late palate, which demonstrates a great balance. The finish is intense; deep, sweet...
