I'm off on my travels again and didn't bring my bottle with me so won't be able to take part in the tasting.

However, please don't wait for me to be able to take part as this is likely to be sometime after the middle of September! My diary is truly horrible for the next 6 weeks.

I will be with you - but only in spirit. I've got so may travel commitments between now and the end of September (including some rugby watching visits to the continent) that I will absolutely not be able to make it to St Helens for TPF Offline #2. I hope you enjoy yourselves and have a fantastic tim...

Perhaps we should send him some port - if he drank more port then surely he would suffer fewer injuries.

What should we send him?

I wish I'd stayed on in London, as well. Although I did manage to catch my last train (just) I still only managed about 3½ hours sleep before having to get up to get my sorry self over to Heathrow just to sit and wait for 3 hours waiting for our designated take-off slot. God I hate Heathrow. I wish ...

Well at least Alan can add another 1963 vintage port to the list of birth year ports consumed.

Pity you didn't manage to drink the whole bottle between you all ... or did you?

I'm not an expert in the field of EU duty and VAT law, but my layman's understanding is that if you were to buy port ex-Quinta and ship it to the UK for your own consumption (either your own personal consumption or for the personal consumption of the people who are members of the cooperative that bu...

No-one did take photos, but we have all been suitably chastised. Perhaps on the next occasion. Tom - how about some scores. I'd be interested to see where you pitch your thoughts on the performance of the wines. All except the Offley '63 (late edit to add this to my notes above) and the Fonseca '66 ...

It was a real pleasure to meet up with a bunch of other port fans on Wednesday night and my thanks go to Alex K for making all the arrangements and to the staff - and Ian in particular - at the Crusting Pipe for making us as welcome as always. Julian's tasting notes and mats also went down a treat a...

Alan, But the Fonseca 2003 is drinking beautifully at the moment... More seriously, I wasn't so much trying to gauge what people would be willing to buy as to what to put at the top of a letter, something along the lines of "I am a member of a port buying cooperative. Over the past 12 months we boug...

Supermarket Clearouts

It occured to me as I was driving home last night, idly thinking about the days of £5 Warre Traditional LBV from Asda and of £10 half bottles of Dow 1983 from Sainsbury, that the small number of people represented on this board might offer an attractive option for the UK supermarkets who want to qui...

I am delighted to report that the tasting notes and place mats printed off beautifully, with the port place mats scaling up extremely well onto A3. In fact, we could probably have got everything onto the A3 place mats because the glass circles scaled up so well!

Thanks Julian.

Derek,

Can you bring your spare Bacofoil with you to the pub on Wednesday? I've run out and probably won't have the chance to buy some between now and the Crusting Pipe.

Thanks,

I agree with Fred here, now that he has raised the subject of Maury. I recently had the opportunity to try a Maury from 1945, bottled in 1995. We tasted it against a Morgan 1945, a Warre 1970, a corked Dow 1985 and a Kopke 1996 Colheita. It was very pleasant. Ranked out of the 5 wines it was dead in...

Julian et al I am only just catching up with weekend postings and don't have the chance to print off mats and notes for all until tomorrow morning. I've been busy moving all my appointments for Wednesday forward in the day so I should be able to get over to Covent Garden between 4:30 and 5pm. I must admit, that taxi driver we had was a complete and utter lunatic. So much so that Derek and I seriously considered paying twice the amount to get back from the Douro to the airport as we had paid for the return journey from the Airport to the Douro and back. The taxi driver didn't even know ho...

I've just had a bit of a play with the site search facility and you can search just the tasting notes section of the forum - for example I have just done a search for wines from 1989. Unfortunately, there isn't an option to only search post titles - its either "post titles and message text" or just ...

Alan,

Thanks for posting the link. That was an extremely interesting read with quite a lot of new views until the tasting notes halfway down.

It prints well onto A3 paper, and fits very neatly.

I'm scheduled to be in my office on both Monday and Tuesday next week so could do the printing then.

Thanks for doing these Julian.

There has been some discussion on the same topic on FTLOP recently in this thread here . Essentially, Roy is suggesting that as well as the option of filtration, the winemaker also has the option of varying the amount of time the wine spends in contact with the grape skins and grape mass to leach th...
