Barros also made a late bottled vintage port from grapes grown in 1993. Wine Searcher shows a couple of retailers, but they want significant amounts of money for a bottle.

Anyone looking for a bargain could take a look at Berry’s warehouse shop in Basingstoke. Magnums of Taylor 1977 @ £400 and of BBR Own Blend 2011 for £88. Both duty paid.

I managed to resist. It wasn’t hard.

Places to visit in the Douro

I’m currently in the Douro working on the b.f.t. and helping Julian sell his book. I thought it might be worth mentioning a couple of places we stayed and / or eaten - although none are new to people who have read travel posts on this forum. The Holiday Inn in Gaia is clean, not too expensive and wi...

2016 Dow

Dark and inky colour. A satisfying nose of damson jam. Dry in style on the palate, full of fruit before the violet-scented tannins crash in a wave over the palate to reveal the big tannic load in the wine. The fruit is pure, refined and present in generous helpings. The finish is very impressive, bi...

2016 Croft

Deep red but with a transparent centre. Soft fruit on the nose, full of summer fruits like raspberries and blackcurrants. Slightly aggressive entry, balanced on the mid-palate with plenty of ripe fruit and nice grippy tannins. Sweet fruit dominates the finish with lingering tannins that are ripe and...

2016 Cockburn

Deep red with an opaque centre. Muted fruit on the nose, none of the deep concentrated blackcurrant seen on some of the ports from this vintage. Medium weight entry; gripping tannins with clean fruit — more elegance and refinement than the other SFE ports from the vintage. Gentle grip on the afterta...

2016 Messias Cachao

From Messias, tasted alongside the full blend. Cask sample. Not quite transparent at the core. Nosing of soft baked blackcurrant biscuits. Delicious entry with plenty of acidity, generous amounts of fruit and terrific tannins that together have a lovely balance. A good, chewy aftertaste and blackcur...

Re: Taylor's historic limited edition

As far as I can remember from when the wine was shown at the BFT in May this year, it is a special blend put together purely for this bottling. I forget what the average age of the wine is, but I'll see if I can find out.

Hi! (my first post, I have been reading here for a year or two, but only just started an account). I wish I was living in London and could participate in this event. But I do hope to enjoy reading your opinions on the 2016 vintages, as I plan to buy one or two for my son (who was born that year) so...

2016 Valriz

Unusually for young vintage port, this wine was not opaque. Gentle Parma Violets infuse the nose, sweet and slightly powdery at first but moving to be an astringent (and still powdery) blackcurrant with a little swirl. Modest bodied entry, with the astringent blackcurrant and powerful acidity domina...

On Wednesday 12th September, a group of us got together to taste the 2016 vintage from 20 different shippers. These samples were tasted sighted, from bottles which were opened shortly before being tasted, but which were revisited over the course of about 4 hours. A special thank you to Tony Carter o...

I took a good look at the photo. I think the photo is upside down and what we can see is the O and part of the R from the word PORT. I’d have to check my records, but I have a few bottles that were sealed with PORT across the cork, mostly port from pre-WW2.

If the food order has been submitted, I’ll order on the night. If it’s not been submitted, please could I have my standard order.

I will also bring something a little more mature than 2016 to drink with / after dinner.
