Re: May in Portugal: Half marathon and some Ports

1893 would seem more likely for a 93 than 1993... Hatch Mansfield of 1 Cockspur Street, in about 1903, described 1893 as ‟Very bad”. Even allowing for traditionally Edwardian euphemistic use of English, I am not sure one could adequately describe 1993 as ‟very bad”... Incidentally, André L. Simon...

I notice Almibar Pro is currently available for $7.99 which might be helpful for testing swash handling:

Re: Jugged HAre

they're called quinta roriz for a reason ! That's the wrong way round. The grape is known as Roriz in the Douro because, according to the guys who work there, it was first introduced to the region at Quinta do Roriz  I suppose the other point is that, before the 20th Century, far less Touriga...

Re: Software that makes placemats

Should the font selected for the place-mat have, in effect, built in negative kerning, in that some of the glyphs go over the y-axis, then there may be a clash between some letters and the lines on the question and other pages. For example, the J in Jannon T Moderne Pro Italic overlaps the y-axis (i...

Re: Some Noval: 25 June

There is an outside chance that I will have two guests with me on Monday night. I will give as much warning as I can and will provide additional bottles if they are able to attend. If this causes problems, then let me know and I will de-invite them, but thought it might be worth asking them along s...

Very sorry I cannot make it! What a wonderful tasting and sorry for the short notice! Not to worry; hope to see you soon! Jacob - because JDAW isn't attending, I have brought the 1963 for the line-up and not the 1978 as shown on the first post. Thanks; that’s very generous of you. There is an outsi...

I wonder if this is the only Crusted Port made by a Portuguese Shipper as opposed to one with more traditional English leanings.

Re: Some Noval: 25 June

My bottle of 1963 was dropped off at The Bunghole Cellars this evening, to be allowed to settle over the weekend. Great. I hope mine will join it there this afternoon. I've just heard that CMAG will not be able to make the tasting (presumably meaning that his +1 will also not be with us). That’s a ...

Re: Rio Tua

hmm... I didn't think those who terraced the region had a concept of "too steep" but that gives me an excellent excuse to look at some topographic maps of the region! ;-) I'd completely forgotten about the dam which they are building there; I suppose the damage will be much less than that caused by ...

Rio Tua

When doing some more work on the map of the Douro , I was struck by the lack of Quintas going up the Rio Tua. Looking back at Forrester’s map (excuse the misplacing of Quinta do Tua), this seems to have been the case for at least 150 years. The reason I find this interesting is that most of the othe...

Re: Maps of the Douro

I’ve been doing some more work on the map, double-checking the entries against other sources and making some corrections. Could anyone help me with the following? Up the Pinhão river, where is Quinta do Fojo and Quinta do Cruzeiro? I think I’ve Fojo where Cruzeiro should be but I’m not sure where F...

At 24+ hours it becomes apparent that the bottle is ever-so-slightly corked. Not enough to make it undrinkable, but just enough to mute the aromas and primary fruit.

I have booked for the 25th. I am told that if there are requests for things--like a ‟club sirloin”--that aren’t on the menu, then I will need to order those on the 18th June, so please let me know. (I always assumed one chunk of flesh was much like any other, but then this isn’t really my area of e...

2000 Krohn Colheita

Bottled in 2011, with a shortish cork that is, surprisingly unbranded. Reasonably deep colour for a 11-year-old colheita. Lightish burgundy in the middle, fading to an orange rim. At 2+ hours, this is quite muted on the nose (though a cold could be contributing). In the mouth, I immediately gets lot...
