Re: The 2014 Harvest

There was lots of rain at the weekend and beginning of this week but none since Tuesday afternoon. The grapes picked before the rain are generally reported as being superb but on average it seems most producers only picked about one third before the weather broke. All fruit seems to have been fully...

Thu, 25 Sep 2014 14:46:34 +0100 We are currently having adverse performance on this server, and are investigating the causes. We expect to have it back to normal operation soon, and apologise for any inconvenience caused. Perhaps that’s the problem. *** On trying to post this the first time, I rece...

Brief downtime

There seemed to be about 5-10 minutes’ unavailability between 19.09 and 19.19 BST this evening. I first got configuration errors and then 503 “there is no server available to complete your request” errors. Clearly a few minutes’ downtime isn’t necessarily a problem, but I dare say it’s not something...

Re: Terroir and Port

Thanks for that fulsome response, most interesting. I wonder if the variations which Jacob and you have noted could help me identify port which may closest replicate the elegant style of old Cockburn. I find that darker ports seem to be proliferating. I suppose I could just look at the map and iden...

Re: Terroir and Port

For 2000, 2003 and 2007 (maybe others, but those I know) both a Cockburn's and a Quinta dos Canais were made. Also Martinez in each of those years. Might be interesting to line up and taste. There are a few older ones, too. Taylor and Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas 1970 (albeit the latter was a bit o...

Re: Oporto and the Duoro

I keep hearing how wonderful the 85 is but I have yet to taste it. I've also heard that the other earlier vintages were a bit 'meh'. Is this a common perception? I suppose it depends on what you describe as “earlier”. There weren’t many Churchills that pre-dated the ’85! The ’82 is pretty good, I t...

Terroir and Port

A few years ago I remember reading (or possibly hearing) that one of the motivations behind Niepoort’s Morgadio da Calçada project was to produce a Provezende-style Port which was otherwise unavailable. I have been wondering about this recently, and the slightly unusal relationship between terroir a...

Re: The 2014 Harvest

If Malvedos wasn’t the only Quinta where the picking of the best lots took place before the rain, there might be some decent Port still produced by those who got the right grapes in at the right time. Perhaps a bit like 2010?

Re: Alcohol and health

A favourite book of my grandfather was Dr E A Maker's Wine is the Best Medicine . I have recently acquired a copy and have been reminding myself why it is such a fascinating and important work. After setting out the basic theory: wine, being a natural product, contains many elements which are useful...

Re: Tappit hen

Oh and; The wiki table could be enhanced by including port in the list of wine styles. There is no mention of the 70cL size that was commonly called a bottle prior to standardisation, and the Tappit Hen is actually 210cL not 225cL. I’ve never quite understood the rational of the 70cl bottle. It doe...

Re: Oporto and the Duoro

So I now have a corollary: "Do not try to make me vegetarian Francesinha." Francesinha is a meat dish. If you take out the meat, it is no longer a Francesinha. It might be delicious. I might even order it. But call it something else because calling it a Francesinha, even calling it a vegetarian Fra...

Re: The 2014 Harvest

There was a bit of picking going on at Quinta Nova on Saturday but I saw very little elsewhere with most people saying they were going to start this week or later. I was intriged on how many grapes in the parts of Quinta do Panascal which you can walk around had appeared to have gone over and shrive...

Oporto and the Duoro

Rather at the last minute, CHR and I booked a trip to Porto. A consequence of it being booked rather at the last minute was that we had no time to anything in advance and so were limited to quintas and lodges that were open to the general public without reservation. We did, however, arrange a car fo...

Re: Business cards

To label the 1977 as they did, it is my understanding that the Cockburn 1977 was ultimately approved as a "Vintage Port" by IVP/IVDP, even if it was originally bottled with corks labelled "crusted". However, i'd be interested to know if this is correct or whether i mis-understood the snippet of con...

Re: Business cards

When these cards were first made each circle came from a different company. Since when Ck has been acquired by the owners of V: should it be changed? Obvious candidate replacements might include Cá45 and Mz66. I quite like Cockburn 1977 on the card since there are few major declarations missed by a...

Re: Time for a TN sort?

Yes. I am afraid there are two problems. Firstly, I have been hopeless. Secondly, I lost the most recent version of the code. I do have a backup but it will require some work. I am starting on the process now. Considering my incompetence, it strikes me I need to work on automating the system. But on...

Re: 25 July 2012, Olympic Years ’48 to ’08, Portuguese Embas

I see that Uncle Tom was in prime spot to the right of the Bishop of Norwich. Did he ask The Question? Indeed, what is the right question in that situation? I think we ought to be told. Replace "Do you know" with "Are you". :D I’m not convinced the traditional response to the answer would work or b...

Re: Symingtons Acquire Cockburn Port Brand

I entirely missed this when AHB posted it in March. I find paragraph 19 particularly interesting: ‟The majority of third parties [i.e. other shippers] indicated that ample supply [of Port] can be obtained from the Casa do Douro which has significant stocks of port that they readily sell. One port ho...

My previous laptop died a little while ago and I am currently borrowing a MacBook, which doesn’t have the various pieces of software on it to generate the index. Therefore, apologies for the hiatus in updating. I’ll try to update it again once my new one arrives in the next couple of weeks.
