Re: 1997 Fonseca

A closed nose that opens up on the palate. Chocolate, caramel, spicy. A white pepper heat. Not much fruit, maybe a little redcurrant hiding in behind. A good long finish. Another of this evening's ports that seems like it needs more time to open up.

Re: 1997 Taylor

A closed, spirity nose. Similarly closed on the palate but with a minerality. Eucalyptus. Not aggressively tannic but seems like it's holding back.

Another gentle nose, subtle red fruits. A touch of pepper spice. Sweet red fruit on the palate. A touch of spice. Nice but nothing more for my money.

Re: 1997 Noval

A bit of a muted nose. Slightly spiced red fruits. Red berries, salinity and pepper. Some caramel sweetness. I'm a bit underwhelmed by this, if I'm honest.

Re: 1997 Burmester

Sweet red fruits in the nose. A touch of eucalyptus. Soft fruits on palate. Cranberry and what I initially thought of as a biscuit, but Mike suggested salted caramel and I'm inclined to agree. Not a long finish but an enjoyable port. Good.

I was going to to mine the night before, so 24hrs sounds reasonable.
Reminder: (double-)decant this evening.
Dow has been double decanted. Have I missed the start time? I am planning for 6/6.30.

NV Quevedo White 30YO

A kind donation of the remains of a bottle from from Oscar at the BFT who was flying back the next morning and wouldn't be taking it with him. It was lovely to get time to chat with him about his wines at the event, and all of the wines Quevedo had brought were showing well (including the 2017 LBV w...

NV Pocas Ruby Reserve

NV Poças Reserve Ruby Purchased from Portugal Vineyards, pre-Brexit. PnP This is a lovely ruby reserve, maybe one of the best I've had. Cherries on the nose. Really rich on the palate, on the sweet side but not unpleasantly so. Cherry fruits, verging on glacé sweetness, maybe Kirsch. Caramel and st...

NV Pocas White (Special Reserve Dry)

NV Poças Special Reserve Dry White Purchased from Portugal Vineyards in that heady time before Brexit regulations kicked in, this was opened as I needed both an interesting drinking option and also one that I could add a splash of to a risotto. I decided this would be ideal. PnP Yep, this is dry. G...

2019 Churchill Gricha

Decant + 6 hours A sample 375ml bottle included with a 3 pack of 2019 Churchill Quinta da Gricha bought through the Churchill Port.Club offer. Dark purple, entirely opaque. This starts with a gentle floral red berry fruit note on the nose, but on the palate it's a bigger beast. The first sip brought...

1981 Kopke Colheita

Bought as a birthday present to myself from VWP. PnP - a stunning golden orange colour, fading to pure gold at the edges. Toffee, orange and nuts on the nose. A spiced cinnamon-citrus entry with dried Christmas pudding fruits; raisins, candied peel, etc. Toffee and nuts are abundant in the mid palat...

1985 Dow

A bottle to share with my family over Christmas, this one was showing very slight signs of seepage. My dad managed to get the cork out whole with just a regular wing corkscrew! Decant + 5 hours: A dark brick red with a hint of purple, still fairly opaque but fading to an orange/brown at the very edg...

NV Churchill Tawny 20YO

PnP - Certainly a spicy tawny, this leads with pepperiness to the fore. Caramel, apple and a citrus acidity to keep the sweetness in check. Not entirely sure what to make of the nose, it is quite muted. This coats the mouth nicely and there's a good finish. I'm not totally convinced as there is an o...

Waitrose are having one of their regular-ish 25% off six bottles or more. Includes all their fortifieds. Waitrose cellar doesn't appear to include fortified wines, just table and sparkling, is that just in store? That deal has expired now. Ah, thanks Zak. I'll have to jump on it next time - I like ...

Not exactly furniture, but my mum has repurposed the case from a port gift I gave my dad some years ago (the bottles are stored somewhere cool and dark). Apparently this is a useful way of preventing local ruffian mice from chewing through various gardening paraphernalia. https://uploads.tapatalk-cd...

Re: 2020 Vintage Port Declarations

Yesterday Quevedo showed a cask sample of their 2020 Vintage Port. I thought it showed a lot of promise. Tightly coiled with a lot of depth and plenty of fruit. Massively tannic right now.
