Re: NV Ferreira "HMY Britannia Decommissioning" Ruby Reserve

I found my note from the tasting, so thought for the sake of completeness that I would post it here: "Clear centre, pale red in colour. Nose of redcurrant jelly and some all spice with just a hint of the alcohol showing through. Gentle and silky on the tongue; sweet but not overly so and with p...

Glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself. That Dalva white colheita is a pretty impressive wine. What are you plans for today?

2005 Niepoort vintage port

Deep red in colour but transparent on the rim. Faint blackcurrants on the nose. Soft entry, sweet bramble fruit and showing strong but ripe tannins. Good complexity in the mid-palate, although a little limited. A quick burst of heat on swallowing, followed by bone dry cheeks and lips but a generous ...

1980 Quarles Harris

Drunk at the Crusting Pipe offline on May 20th and the third bottle of GC80 opened and drunk in the space of a few weeks by TPF members! Deep red in colour, just transparent in centre. Subdued on the nose, but perfumed and herbaceous. Very sweet in the mouth with lovely fruit; rich and full, and wit...

Re: 1983 Quarles Harris Vintage Port

Deeply coloured, a nice red and with an opaque centre. Very dusty on the nose, full of brambles and fruit bit also with quite a sharp edge. Hollow in the mouth and then very acidic. The mid-palate is quite weak, sweetness but not much else although some tannins remain. Extremely hot aftertaste, quit...

Re: 1960 Dow Vintage Port

A bottle bought from Sothebys and in poor condition, being ullaged 2-3 cm below low shoulder. Pale brown in colour with a hint of red to the browniness. The nose is horribly medicinal and not attractive but does have some sweet red fruit to it. Sweet in the mouth with lots of spice and red licorice ...

Re: 1977 Croft Vintage Port

Pale red in colour and with a deep brown centre. A lively and spicy nose with some of the alcohol showing through. Very hollow initially in the mouth but develops some good flavours eventually. The spirit is not wholly integrated and the tannins have more or less gone. The aftertaste is softly fruit...

Re: 1987 Graham's Malvedos SQVP

Deeply coloured red, showing no magenta or violet of babyhood. Closed on the nose with not much coming out of the glass other than small levels of fruit. Sweet impact in the mouth with a woody hint at the core and plenty of tannins still in the wine. Very sweet, but plenty of fruit, very well develo...

Re: 1984 Churchill Crusted Port

Bottled in 1984, purchased from a wine shop in rural Oxfordshire, along with a magnificent hlaf bottle of Warre 1983. Very pale in colour (although it gained in weight in the glass), looking like a younger colheita. Very hot on the nose, but with some sweet and pleasant raspberry jelly. Soft and swe...

Re: "Bring a Bottle to Share" and 2007 Horizontal; May 2009

It was a great evening and one which I hope Kevin enjoyed and will feel up to joining us again. There were some interesting ports to try. Tom's 1960 dow ullaged to about 2 cm below low shoulder was a bit smelly to start with, but tasted pretty dang decent by the end of the evening - very tawny but v...

Re: US Port Sales Volume

My guess is that no-one collects the exact statistic that you are after. Probably the best you might be able to do is to ask the producers - or perhaps to ask the producers' exclusive distribution agents. It is just possible that some of them would be willing to share this information with you is it...

Dirk,

You very welcome to The Port Forum! While nowhere near south-west Germany, I can promise you that you are most welcome to be a part of one of our London tastings when you next travel to London - and if there isn't an offline planned when you visit, we can soon fix that!

Re: Port for sale at auction

Jacob, Keep an eye on the ebay auctions for us. I have a poor view of the ebay auction route for acquiring port as prices are often extraordinarily high. As Alex M says, prices paid for 1975 ports are sometimes quite astonishing, but I often find that prices are very high and sometimes (often?) high...

A 1L collapsible decanter has been purchased and will be tested. I have one of these for use as a water container (with drinking hose) when skiing. I recommend regular and careful cleaning and drying. They can quickly become mouldy with just water. When port is introduced I would suggest you experi...

Re: NV Fonseca 10YO Tawny (Bottled 1979)

Ben kindly passed a sample bottle of this to me when we met at the Oval after work in the week. This was pale in colour, almost a greeny-brown. On the nose there were light sugar flavours, some fudge and golden treacle. The golden treacle came through in the mouth, but the flavours were weak and the...

I think it may have been deliberate. This would make it a joke. Talk amongst yourselves. I'm fairly certain that it was deliberate and is a joke. The joke continues, however, in a more Dow's-like manner. I never drink brandy unless I have had too much port. This is surely a tautology? Hmm... not su...

So, to summarise, Derek will now be trying to fit his work shirt and a bottle of port into something the size of a caesium atom and has a fraction of a second to achieve this act, or as much time as he wants if he does it in the dark where there is no light to see by.

Have I understood correctly?

I'm not sure which Stranglers album that was off, but that counts as a guess in my mind. My next guess is Non Stop (Nun).

1983 Warre vintage port

As a break from tasting 2007 barrel samples, I opened this half bottle as a palate cleanser. What a great choice it was. From a half bottle. A deeply coloured mahogany, transparent but not pale. Cinammon and cedar wood spiced cherries on the nose, rich and sweet and very inviting. One of those bouqu...
