Re: Port for sale by retailer

Fonseca 2007 on sale at Garrafeira Nacional . Only 45 euro a bottle. I was in that shop 3 months ago, but it's a pity about the Euro exchange rate! On another note, Virgin Wines are doing Croft Quinta da Roeda '97 at £17, and depending upon accumulation of Winebank 'interest' works out at under £13.

I find the wooden presentation boxes for single bottles very useful for growing tomato and chilli seedlings

2002 Graham's Crusted

D+1.5 Herby nose. Sweet, not cloying, medium finish. Juicy acidity that might be approaching VA. Big tannins. Should be good for a few years but not the long term. D+27 Nose not so strong and seems sweeter. Acidity has faded in favour of this sweetness. D+72 Heat and tannin most prominent. Sweet. Li...

2001 Pocas LBV (unfiltered)

Dark, almost opaque, leaving light red in the tears. The fruit is a smidgen dominated, but this still tastes very young - big tannins. Dark fruits and mocha. Very good now and ought to show better in a few years time.

1996 Fonseca Guimaraens

Much, much better bottle! I think AHB was very likely correct about the last bottle. Plums and black cherries; tannins show youth left but I don't think this is far off being excellent.

Notes left at the table.

From memory- not dissimilar to the Warre 83 this evening, the finish was just a touch less complete.

From memory- this one I remember started off well but a strange bitterness took over after a couple of seconds. Disappointing.

Re: 9th March 2010 - Crusting Pipe - Bring a bottle of Port

Ouch. Forgotten what a port hangover feels like :( Excellent ports, great and informative company, and the food was very good as well. I left all my notes behind, but I believe the wines were Warre 70, Warre 77, Croft 82, Warre 83, Taylor TF 86, Croft 00 and Niepoort 03. Preferred the 80s (with a pr...

Re: 1996 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

that very flat nose and palate is very typical of a mildly corked port You are probably right, though the only TCA I could detect was from the cork; the wine itself has no such smell. It is, however, still very drinkable especially considering the price paid (£10). That said, I had a claret-style w...

Re: NV Taylor First Estate

I hate to say this, but it has improved overnight. But the nose is not dissimilar to generic Aussie Shiraz, and the finish seems to end before it starts - it's a bit sudden! Then it starts to cloy. Still, I don't think it'd be a bad one to serve to non-port drinking friends-of-friends (while you sip...

Re: 1996 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

On reflection not really scarlet (that would be weird). More a deep purpley red with a light rim.

Anyway

D+14.5
Nose starting to reveal something, but still elusive. Still hiding, finish is a little medicinal. Needs more time, but it is a well balanced wine.

1996 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port

Decanted, with plenty of small chunks. Lovely translucent scarlet colour fading slightly to the rim. Cork came out cleanly, but strongly smelling of TCA. D+0 However the wine has no evidence of the cardboard stink - the nose just isn't revealing much at all. In the mouth, still not giving me anythin...
