Making the best of a weak vintage
Would a weak vintage be better off left in the barrel and bottled later as a colheita? I ask because I have had very good colheitas from '82 and '84. As vintage proper the former appears to give very mixed results (as seen in the recent offline), and the latter very little seems to be available (was...

Re: TheVintagePortSite Virus Issue
The problem is still there: <p>It was the fourth vintage that robotic lagares were used, now that we have them at Sol, Malvedos and Sra. da Ribeira. The fine tuning that has been carried out over the last three years is proving to be succesful with high levels of extraction being achieved. Due to t...

Re: Father's Day Port
Although it was never intended, a bottle and a half were consumed on Father's Day. The intention was to make a sweet relish to go with the roast beef for lunch. Opened a half of Croft LBV, used about a third for the sauce, drank the rest, felt it wasn't enough, so opened a Roeda '97.

Now that you mention it, I've found their website takes ages to load, and sometimes not at all.

Re: 1989 Morgan (M&S BOB) LBV
Despite the spiel on the bottle saying to drink within 1 year of purchase, this is almost certainly better after more than a decade past its recommended drink-by date - though it may well have been better 5 years ago. 2 days later and it's still holding up nicely - lightened up slightly now and show...

Re: 1989 Morgan (M&S BOB) LBV
Mark, Did you buy this recently? I haven't seen it in M&S and would be keen to try it. What was the price? Derek A few months ago through ebay of all places - the seller happened to live nearby; gave her a tenner for it. Has the St Michael labelling so presumably was only in the shops within a ...

1989 Marks and Spencer LBV
1989 Morgan (Marks and Spencer BOB) LBV Dark but a dull ruby, showing some age. Like a good standard of LBV with the usual dark fruits, herbs and chocolate on the nose - but a touch dusty. Some hint of age - there's a little marzipan showing - though it seems very young for its actual age. A bit su...

Re: N/V Graham 10 Year Old Tawny
Just to add my two penn'orth, I rather prefer the tawny styles, though 10 year olds (and their Colheita equivalents) are, to me, better as a chilled aperitif. Double the age and it's a far superior drink; sadly the price doubles too

2003 Graham's LBV
Mint and blackberry nose. Licquorice dominates in the mouth, with some spice, though the fruit is a touch light and leaves a slight emptiness. Plenty of grip that balances well with the acidity. Medium length finish. Not particularly interesting, but nevertheless a good standard of LBV.

From a half bottle.
Bricking red. Enticing nose of cherries and red berries. Smooth and sweet entry, berries coming through in the mouth too. Some heat, but good acidity. Finish is long and nutty. Very nice port, and seems to be at a very good stage of its life.

2006 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz
Very dark in the glass. Leathery nose of vanilla and smokey oak. Oak dominates with very grippy tannins, but isn't rough. Good acidity, and dark fruits also showing. Very long finish of wood and mushroom. Very young and powerful, and ought to have many years in it.

2003 Dow's Crusted Port
Delicious. Very young, with stained tears. Mint, fennel, cherries, cranberries and blackberries. Barely sweet, but spicy, good acidity. Should age well, but is very drinkable right now.

Re: June Offline - Crusting Pipe - 1982 horicontal?
I am a possible; though again I'd need to adopt, if anyone can oblige? I have '82 only in Colheita form (which presumably doesn't qualify!)

Re: 1999 Chateau Musar
Did anyone try the Musar from 1997? I tried it last October (along with several other vintages): "Tasted in this order: 1999- dull red/brown, plums, sweet port-like smell, touch of mint. Plummy taste, tangy acidity 1998- similar colour to 99, smell very different- wood, vanilla, earthy. A litt...

1982 Andresen Colheita (bottled 2009)
50cl, bottled 2009.
Good mid-colour tawny. Strong nose of marzipan, christmas cake and some coffee. In the mouth, sweet and spicy, and balanced with good acidity. Very smooth to drink, and it expands in the mouth nicely leaving a very long finish. Excellent colheita.

2003 Taylor LBV
Rich, dark berry nose, and some herbs/aniseed, and a touch of bread. Very smooth, some touches of mint along with the fruit and aniseed. Good balance of acidity and tannin, and a nice bitter chocolate finish. A well made LBV, and despite it being filtered, this might be interesting to try again in a...

Re: 1997 Croft Roeda
Very young, dark, classic herbal nose. Grippy, fruity and extremely moreish; this ought to show better at the next election! Do you really think that an extra six months will make a substantial difference to this wine? I’m surprised: my expectation was that it needs at least four years before being...

Re: 1935 Taylor
Lovely tawny colour. Slightly nutty nose but had a lovely woody smokiness. Raisins, marzipan and peel in the mouth, there's heat and spice which fades to an extremely long nutty finish. If tasted out of the context of the evening I'd've probably said this was a moderately aged (20-30 years) tawny po...

Re: 1983 Dow
Looking quite young still, only a tiny hint of browning. Some wood and smoke, and red berries. Initial sweetness goes dry with the tannins, and some heat too. Very good and has some years yet to reach its best.

Re: 1970 Warre
Still very red in colour, looking youthful still. Thought the nose was quite tarry, some smoke. Sweet, grippy and a hot finish. Took a while to come round for me, but loved it. Mistook it for something much younger!
