Re: 1985 Dow

Dow 1985: Starting to lose its color but still somewhat dark, less hot on the nose than the 83, but to me a little less fruity. Out of the 83's and 85's we had this evening, the Dow pair seemed to be most similar in style. The 85 struck me as a little more tannic and closed, but it still had the sa...

Re: 1983 Dow

Dow 1983: Very hot, dark plummy, pruney fruits on the nose. Flavor strong prunes and bitter chocolate. A substantial port. I know Dow has a reputation for dryness but I did not find this overly dry, perhaps the dryness was balanced out by the rich, strong flavors and body. One of my favorites of th...

Re: 1985 Gould Campbell

Gould Campbell 1985: Color seemed a bit lighter than the 83, nose fairly light with a hint of cinnamon and spice, fairly sweet and light. Comparing it to the 83, I did not notice the same tropical fruity finish on the 85. Overall, a very well-balanced port, quite enjoyable.

Re: 1983 Gould Campbell

Gould Campbell 1983: one of the darkest colored ports of the evening, still a rather deep purplish. Very well balanced on the nose, dark fruits, fairly clean and straightforward. Light mouthfeel, decent flavor with a tropical fruity/Hawaiian Punch finish. Quite pleasing.

Re: 1983 Nacional

Noval Nacional 1983: Color very pale and delicate. Very funky highly vegetal nose - I noted celery and it seemed to come and go throughout the evening. On day 2 the celery note was still present, but it was more subdued. Flavor fairly acidic, strawberry-rhubarb pie. Very odd acidic, slightly metall...

Re: 1985 Nacional

Noval Nacional 1985: color fairly pale. A rather odd, sweetly medicinal nose, like certain kinds of cough syrup with a hint of St. Joseph's Children's Asprin. Good length, which I didn't expect considering the rather light mouthfeel. Taste slightly acidic, with more hints of the children's asprin a...

I haven't seen a post from him in this thread for a while.
You bet I'm attending! I'm making a trip to Rhode Island to pick up the Nacional this weekend.

Have we set a time yet? 6 PM, I assume?

I just picked up a Dow 2001, which is filtered. As Julian suggested, we should have at least one filtered LBV for comparison, so how about I bring the Dow instead of the Fonseca and allow Dave to adopt that instead. So I would be contributing the Javali and the Castelinho, and Dave would be contribu...

Julian: A correction. The Fonseca is also unfiltered. They just started making unfiltered LBV's. Jay: FYI: As far as decanting times goes, I will have to decant mine before I leave for work in the morning, so mine will be decanted for around 9 hours. Different Dave: Did you want to adopt one of mine...

I believe all of the LBV's that people will be bringing are unfiltered. Maybe we should throw in a standard flitered LBV for comparison. I also just recently picked up a Quarles Harris 2001, which is filtered. Maybe I should add that one.

Yes Jay, a lot of them did come from Newark and it's environs. I tend to pick up oddball LBV's out of curiousity whenever I see them. The Qta do Javali I picked up at AVEPOD in Oporto on Roy's Harvest Tour. I do not know of it's availability in the U.S. but I've never seen it for sale around here, s...

I think this could be a very interesting tasting, especially since I haven't had much of a chance to taste many older LBV's. It would also be nice to try filtered aginst unfiltered. Here are the LBV's I currently have on hand: Warre 1994 Rozes 1994 Sao Pedro 1997 Qta do Castelinho 1997 Pocas 1998 Fo...

This was a weird one. Offley 1968 Colheita. Very murky brown color, muddy. Nose sharply acidic, like a madeira, a little burnt and smoky. There is a curious scent that I associate with some of the older colheitas like this one; I call it 'musky jungle flower'. I've never been in the jungle, so I hav...

I wasn't too keen on the Infantado 1985. My first Infantado as well. Brownish color, curious nose of strawberries and camphor. Not very sweet, minty, decent mouthfeel, spice on the finish (nutmeg?) 89 pts.

I liked the Ramos Pinto 1985 very much. Nicely purple color, nose sweet and somewhat floral. Good chocolaty flavor, rich, really quite solid. Still somewhat tannic with a bit of a caramel finish. Very good. 91 pts.
