Re: 1994s, Tue 26 Mar 2024

JDAW is rushed off his feet at the moment, so I've stepped in to take over the organising of this tasting. As Harry has noted above, this is the Tuesday before the Easter weekend BUT, if your school holidays are the same as in our area, the schools don't break up until Good Friday so Tuesday is stil...

Re: LBV - The Young Turks

My diary is pretty full late April / early May.

Pop me on the reserves list for 25th April, just in case I can make it nearer the time.

Julian, we should revive the thread organising this tasting. If you want me to step in and take over, I'm happy to do so - just let me know.

Re: Aged LBVs - Tue 5 March 2024 @ B&F - ALIVE AGAIN!

I am unlikely to be able to attend on the new date, if I am able to it’s likely to be a last minute change of plans.

If plans change, I’ll just have to take the risk that a space comes available for me.

Re: Thoughts on LBVs

I’ve just opened a bottle of Sandeman 2007 LBV. While it’s nowhere near the age that Andy and Tom have been discussing, I can confirm that with 17 years of aging, this LBV is effing delicious!

1948 Taylor

The most mature in appearance of the fortified wines at the tasting, a burnished copper colour which is 30% opaque. Sweet fruit on the nose, subdued and a little oxidised. Thick in texture with the fruit having dried out. Dry in tone, with an attractive bitterness on the fruit and a good finish with...

A soft rose red colour, 60% opaque. Subdued on the nose, a little dusty fruit. A lovely sensation of focused fruit on the palace, coming with a nice grip, youthful but with delicious signs of early maturity. Superb fruit on the aftertaste leading to a lingering raspberry finish along with some rosew...

1962 Quinta do Noval Nacional

Deep red tone, looking to be in early maturity; 90% opaque. A lovely nose of deep red fruit - raspberries perhaps? Sweet fruit leads on the palate, a delicious blend of strawberry jam and plum; big and vivacious. Plum and lavender on the aftertaste, with the lavender dominating the finish. This is a...

Mature burnished copper colour. Limited nose, but what shows is dominated by the fruit. Dry edges on the palate from the fresh and slightly rustic tannins, limited youthful fruit that is not yet at its best although the wine is very nice. Youthful black and red fruit on the aftertaste; barely mature...

A gentle rose red colour, 20% opaque. Bizarre nose on the wine, really odd - full of lavender soap. Soapy orange on the palate, a little tannin giving a gentle dry grip. A really peculiar combination! A little heat on the aftertaste, a finish which is the best feature of the wine. Surely this cannot...

Mature copper-red colour, 30% opaque. A little limited on the nose, showing some faint cranberry sauce. A lovely texture on the palate, delightful tannins and cranberry sauce on the palate. Full of life and totally vivacious. Great acidity keeps the palate focused and the fruit to the fore. Lingerin...

A mature burnished copper colour, 40% opaque. A glorious mature nose. The palate brings sweet fruit, beautifully spiced through decades of slumber - dried red fruit, citrus zest and delicious Christmas spices. Lingering sweet dried raspberry and All Spice on the aftertaste and finish. A phenomenal V...

Deep red colour with a medium rim. A nose of sweet plums blended with an impressive floral perfume. Beautiful on the palate, with generous bramble fruit carrying soft and gentle tannins that swim effortlessly in the flow of the fruit. Long, dark bramble fruit aftertaste and finish. This is lovely yo...

Magnum. Opened 19.00, decanted at 09.00 for 4 hours before being returned to the bottle. Mature and quite dark red in colour, 70% opaque. Restrained on the nose showing a little lovely fruit.
