Re: The 1000 finest wines ever made
I've just finished updating the list. The first challenge is to decide which 15 ports to drop. Any suggestions?

Re: The 1000 finest wines ever made
Vesuvio 1863 (which is a Colheita) Please say how you know this as I do not agree, but could be wrong That's pretty persuasive. I guess most "vintage" ports back then were colheitas. At Roy's 50th birthday bash we had a bottle of this, and it appeared to have been bottled a very long time...

Re: The 1000 finest wines ever made
I've modified the list to remove wood-aged ports and to reflect comments from various people. Is this now a decent list to try and choose which of these should form our top 10 or are there still ports which people would like to see removed and replaced? 1 Calem White 1933 (is this a vintage or colhe...

Re: The 1000 finest wines ever made
Combining all the lists together and liberally adding a few more of my own, I've come up with the following list of the 100 Greatest Ports Ever made ( with minimum age of 10 years today and as judged when drunk today for both future potential and current enjoyability). So which of these represent t...

My add ons would be: Nacional 97 Dalva Golden White 1952 Warre 66 Cockburn 35 Niepoort 1970 (bulky bottle) Niepoort Colheita 1863 Quarles Harris 1970 Axel I consider myself to be such a novice on the topic of colheitas that I will leave a list of the top wood matured ports to someone better equippe...

Re: 1983 Warre
Deep red in colour with a centre that is just transparent. Slightly closed on the nose, but swirling brings out a lovely, dusty cherry juice. Velvety texture on entry; youthful but mature and with great development on the palate. Tannins virtually integrated, but a lovely acidic structure but a text...

I think it is appropriate to issue a Yellow Card to AHB for his inappropriate behaviour in the above post. When a friend's Mrs decides to give him a public flogging in front of his chums I think it is unnecessary to rub salt in his wounds at a time when he needs our support. Shame on you AHB. :roll...

Have you considered telling SCP-DFF that she is being entirely unreasonable and that her behaviour is unacceptable and an infringement of your basic human rights? In the unlikely event that the above doesn't make SCP-DFF see sense, do you want us to come to Paris in a white van and kindnap you on 2...

Re: Fiftieth Anniversary - Wednesday 19th May
Just a quick note to say that I've just updated the first post on this thread to reflect the people who have said that they would like to attend this offline. Unless anyone has an alternative suggestion, would the Crusting Pipe seem an appropriate place to welcome an American visitor with a Berkshir...

Ouch. Forgotten what a port hangover feels like :( Mark, You were a very welcome addition to the group and I hope you'll join us again in the future. I must apologise as we all forgot to tell you about the most vital component of the port tasting mats - the check boxes on the bottom right hand corn...

Sadly, Wenden's Ambo on a Friday night is just never going to happen for me, whether or not it is St George's Day. Monday - Thursday night is a faint possibility.

Re: Corked/Spoilt Ports - Name and Shame
Two bottles of Croft 1985 opened yesterday were full of VA. I took a sample bottle home and tried it again, 24 hours after opening. Still full of VA but underneath all that nail varnish is a tasty and powerful port. One to avoid if you don't like VA but a nice port if you don't mind VA (I'm in the l...

Re: 1996 Fonseca Guimaraens Vintage Port
Where did you get the bottle? If one of the supermarkets, consider returning it for a replacement - that very flat nose and palate is very typical of a mildly corked port

NV Justerini and Brooks Director's Tawny
Presumed to have been bottled in 2005, based on the serial number printed on the tin seal. Produced for Justerini & Brooks by Quinta & Vineyard Bottlers Lda. Decanted off some fine sludge, still cloudy in the glass, with a very fine sediment that went through the coffee filter. On the nose, ...

Re: 2004 Quinta do Vesuvio
Decanted 48 hours. Deep red in colour, opaque centre, dark rim. Very floral nose, lots of lavender and blueberries. Slightly dry and a little thin in texture. Takes a long time to develop in the mouth, but does eventually and is worth the wait. Lovely aftertaste, bringing a very long length of sweet...

Re: 2003 Quinta do Vesuvio
Vey dark, opaque centre and a deep coloured rim. Vibrant nose, full of blackcurrants and sloes. Soft and smooth texture on entry; plenty of fruit but massive tannins hidden behind it all. Such a fruit driven wine, but without being jammy. Strong structure of acid and tannin promises much for the fut...

Re: 2001 Quinta do Vesuvio
Deep red, with an opaque centre. Youthful. Little on the nose, but what there is is an attractive mix of mulberry and blackberry. Soft in the mouth, covers the tongue with gentle chocolate and bramble. Plenty of soft tannins to support a delightful structure. The aftertaste is slow to develop but ev...
