Re: Apostrophe crimes

There will be three numbers, and I am instructing somebody to take the average of the better two of them. Or should that be the best two of them? So if the numbers are 10, 11 and 12, the result should be Average(11, 12) = 11½. Better two of three, or best two of three? Best two of three. Two of the...

Sainsbury's TTD 1999 VP

I notice that Sainsbury's are selling a TTD 1999 VP (Symington) instead of the previous TTD 2003 VP (Symington) in our local store. In regard to providing an experience that will encourage people to try more port, I applaud the move to offer a slightly older VP under the premium own-label; 2003 may ...

Re: 2004 Croft LBV

I just opened one to console myself, after being told that the case of ex-Gaia Roeda 87 I ordered back in.. oh, October..? was somehow actually not in stock after all. There is only slight nyang. that sound unfortunate; I'd be interested to try the Roeda '87 also; though there is a small chance I m...

Re: 2004 Croft LBV

Postscript to the end of my Croft 04lbv - Despite the decanting having been through a coffee filter (I more usually use surgical gauze, unless as this one it was pop and pour), there was a substantial amount of very fine sediment, a small amount in the last glass, and a lot in the bottom of the deca...

Just finished the rest of it. Much better tonight, softer, gentle and full of fruit, almost no nyang, though of course still very young. Very pleasant.

Re: 2004 Croft LBV

Opened one tonight; seemed ok, very similar to previous bottle - definitely not thin. Young, fruity, only a hint of lbv "nyang" (copyright djewesbury), no acid. Popped and poured direct from cellar.

Re: A fine whine: A Bordeaux Fund

Perhaps instead of charging (say) 1.5% of investor's fund value per year, the stockbroking firm received (say) 20% of the fund's gains for that year but also had to cover (say) 20% of the loss if the fund value fell over that year, as well as requiring that the company has sufficient capital to a va...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Agree on the naming. There are basically two companies which refuse to put "Colheita" on some of their bottles*. The whole "Single harvest tawny" thing drives me nuts. This isn't the 1600's anymore. I'm quite confident UK residents can figure out what Colheita means, just like t...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Also, would it be more highly rated by people tasting it sighted if it said Taylor's or Krohn on the bottle? You really had to go there.... I have no problem with Taylor's having purchased Krohn, and if they choose to sell it branded as Taylor's then that is understandable, never mind completely th...

Re: 2004 Croft LBV

I post not a tasting note here but an observation that every one of the last four or five of these that I've opened has been disappointing: thin, quiet or harshly acidic. Very strange; last year it drank well, and consistently. Do LBVs sleep? Perhaps since last year your baseline has risen due to t...

Re: Unfulfilled ambition...

In terms of tastings within the next 12 months, would there be any interest in: An '82 horizontal would be my pick of your suggestions, I would be keen on this. Other ideas mentioned recently which could also be added to the list include the 1958 horizontal, which I think Wolfgang may be planning; ...

I'd like to add a few to the list (or if keeping separate, this is the current PW list): Niepoort '87 Warre '58 Croft '91 Rebello Valente '70 Warre 1969 LBV Of the above, the Cr91 is the only one I have had before, but it was a while ago and I would like to try it again; the others are all ports I h...

I'm sure we used to have a thread relating to ports that people wanted to try (not necessarily especially old or unusual) but can't find it. Anyone able to point me at it?

Re: 1994 Walk-around in London - 4 March 2014

Unfortunately I have an exam during the day on Mar 4th, and a probable engagement in the evening, so am very unlikely to be able to attend, which is a shame as I would be interested in attending. I don't the see the cost as excessive (yes, we could do a similar event ourselves at lower cost, but it ...

Re: A reason to get up early

My wife and I went for a walk after the rugby as well and noticed that as well as the brightly lit sliver, the rest of the moon's disc facing us seemed to have a small amount of light on it - it looked like a shadow against the black of the sky; I could only assume this was reflected light from the ...

Nov 10th now eliminated due to contributors' unavailability at that time; tasting will therefore be the night before BBR port walk, estimated as Nov 26th (with BBR port walk on Nov 27th)
