Re: Tue 17th April 2018: cellar reduction and health check

Count me in Magnus. Difficult to know yet whether I can help with decanting, but I’ll try and protect my diary to make it possible. Also, if all the bottles are coming from the same storage then you could maybe have them shipped directly to the B&F? Great! You have been added. Good idea about s...

Re: Tue 17th April 2018: cellar reduction and health check

I’ll check my work diary tomorrow mornings and let you know. Would you like any contributions from attendees either in the form of port or in the form of cash for the evening? It would be great if you can make it! No contributions in any form are required for the ports. Food bill dealt with as per ...

Re: Tue 17th April 2018: cellar reduction and health check

I'd be up for this as my diary appears free for this day. I wouldn't be able to help with decanting since will be coming in from Reading but hopefully, someone(s) can step in. Failing that, we could always ask the B&F-I believe they've done some decanting for us before? Excellent! Attendee list...

Tue 17th April 2018: cellar reduction and health check

I am scheduled to attend a conference in London 17-18 April (Tue - Wed), but will arrive in the afternoon on the 16th (Monday). I would really like to meet up over some port at the B&F and was thinking of bringing some bottles out of storage in the interest of doing a "health check" on...

Undisputed first place - Graham 1994; then Fonseca 1985, Offley Boa Vista 1994 and Graham 1970, where only a few bottles differ between second and fourth place.

The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest

The Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest is "a whimsical literary competition that challenges entrants to compose the opening sentence to the worst of all possible novels." Anyone can submit an entry (or several) and the site is a treasure trove of exceptionally bad opening sentences of fiction. ...

Re: Port and literature

In Our Game by Le Carré: I remember thinking, as the thousand-voiced choir of angels struck up inside my head, that if you're celebrating your emergence from the black light, a bottle of '55 Cheval Blanc and a large dose of Graham's '27 port make an appropriately celestial accompaniment. Great autho...

Re: 80s Majors Matrix, Thursday 9 March 2017

Looks like a great evening, i have assumed a dark green shade of envy. Some observations from the score sheet: 1. No points awarded to any port from 1983. In fact, Phil's 1/2 point to T80 implies this was preferable to any wine from 1983. Was the competition too fierce or were the wines simply not t...

Alas, i am stumped. If only jdaw, before dreaming about opening the bottle, had also imagined a pencil and drawing paper with which to transfer the embossed details, however faint, onto the paper.

In addition to the sound advice above I would add Offley Boa Vista 1994, a port which I found over delivered when compared to price.

2014 - which birthyear port to buy?

No.2 child was born in 2014, and unfortunately the port gods did not smile as happily on that year as they did on 2011 when No.1 was born. I would be very grateful for any ideas of ports to buy where the grapes were harvested before the deluge. I note that Noval just released 1,000 cases but am comp...

Like SCP I am also not yet sure about whether I am able to attend, but the better half, in a moment of severe weakness, positively encouraged me to attend. I feel obliged therefore to do as I have been told.. Depending on the date I would very much like to join. Alas, I can only offer '94 and '97 bu...

Re: RE: Re: Tue 16 Aug 2016, Boot & Flogger, Emergency

You generally have a pretty high hit rate as a group if not consistently as individuals. Are you saying that, if there are enough guesses, usually one throw lands near the target? Sensing a trap along the lines of statistics, whether it is real or not, I am trying to say that together a handful of ...

The guesses for Croft 1960 stood out as wildly inaccurate, which is not in line with the abilities of you lot normally. Really? Have you been to our tastings? You generally have a pretty high hit rate as a group if not consistently as individuals. Compared to my own inability to tell chalk from che...

Looks like a nice evening was had, wish i could have been there. The guesses for Croft 1960 stood out as wildly inaccurate, which is not in line with the abilities of you lot normally. Was it really that youthful, and if so, how certain are you that the wine was what it claimed to be? I've only had ...

Re: Latest buy

Having just drunk and enjoyed a bottle of 1980 Warre (note here ) I happened to notice a half case for £150 in bond at Berrys. I almost wonder if it was a mistake, so overpriced are most listings on BBX. However I do not feel I can cavil at £25/bottle for a 36 year old port. Alright I know l shall ...

It was definitely a chunk of cork. The cork I pulled came out completely intact and had not been in long enough to acquire any stain or colouration.

1977 Cockburn

Having been remiss in my port drinking of late, a bottle of Ck77 was offered like a paschal lamb. Decanting revealed (i) remnants of the old cork prior to recorking, (ii) a very pale port of approx. 30 % opacity, (iii) large flaky sediment on the subsequent rinse and most promisingly, (iv) an inviti...
