How about the Fortification Party? We need to build alliances with other minorities, such a sherry and madeira drinkers. Many minorities build a majority!

Julian - any chance of a scientific definition of 'porty goodness'? However, to serious matters; that BBC report marks our government's most serious attack yet on drinkers, aged 39 - 55, (I am 54). If they can brainwash us into seeing drink as a quantity, which they define, then it is another victor...

Bits of the city were rather hard on the nose this morning, and there is a police officer very much the worse for wear after a vicious attack.

Ah, the beautiful game........................

Derek would, I think, be proud of his countrymen in Manchester today. The city has been a sea of blue. The invasion began yesterday afternoon, and they have more or less drank the place dry. If Rangers win tonight, I wonder if there will be city to return to tomorow. If they lose, I wonder.... Being...

The response to my post was so encouraging that I made enquries about a discount for a block booking. The answer was encouraging; some input from the financial wizard members should help make our capital go further. I have tried to interview some nurses but with disappointing results. Who is cupid s...

I booked a place there some time ago. They provide wicker wheelchairs, three wheels with a steering handle. The chairs are pushed by refined but attractive nurses wearing traditional capes. The usual route is along a terrace and through some ornamental gardens. Most mornings one can enjoy a glass of ...

I would have put Sen Mc Cain down as Dow, a dry and powerful individual with a distinguished lineage.

May Day is traditionally a day of celebration. Today's newspaper reports the birth of cygnets in Dorset, traditionally heralding summer. I have summoned up the energy to mow the lawn.

What a fine time to drink in style. My vote goes for the Fonseca; so uplifting!

This was a pleasing conclusion to a good Friday lunch. I do not know how long it had been decanted, but it was plenty of sweet richness, and not heat or coarseness. Having said that, there was not much depth or finish. A very agreeable port but not one to stick in the memory.

This is a bit worrying even though the replies came as no surprise. Is there something irredeemably selfish about being a port drinker.?Is it properly an enthusiasm for those who live alone, or at least in the east wing of a very large house? This may be territory we do not wish to explore.............

Snoring

Since no one has posted any meaningless drivel since Monday, I thought it only right to add a bit before the week is out. Snoring, and wonder cures for it, is a topic which frequently populates the newspapers. I am a snorer as my family and other users of public transport can testify. It is alleged ...

My slightly facetious reference to scoring aimed at finding a use for what I think is otherwise useless, towit a subjectively constructed means of objectively saying that something purporting to be port is so awful that it is unworthy of the name. I did not anticipate that some questioned whether wh...

Addressing Alex's question, perhaps there is a use for scoring. If you can score anything, at what point does it cease to be sufficiently interesting to be worth thinking of as port or claret or... "While Bacchanalians madly sing and magnify impiety We'll load the passing zephyr's wing with praises of sobriety" T**t*t*l propagandists compelled children to chant the foregoing drivel at a public meeting in Bolton in 1851. When I was a lad a woman came round to my primary school with te...

Wasn't the old motto of Yates Wine Lodges

'Moderation is true temperance'.

Do any of you remember Yates before they went up market (they couldn't go further down)? Does Australian Leading Port still exist? It was sold in half pint mugs I think.

My Lenten abstinence has involved avoiding port, so this Sunday should be marked by something special. But what???? Oh, the agony!
