Saving Opened Port

So in the rest of the wine world, it is possible to significantly stretch the life of a bottle by pouring some of the wine into a bottle immediately after opening, ensuring very little air is left, and refrigerating. Some folks even claim they've put these bottles back in the cellars and they've age...

And here i thought I was buying too much -- then i see these lists!

I've sadly lost track of all the recent buys, it's mingled together now, but there've been 1/2 bottles of 88 Taylor Vargellas, a 2000 S&W, some calem from 96, 97, and 2000, churchill 95, and Noval 00.

I generally aim for a mixed case from any 92+ year (94, 97, 00, 03, would have done 83 & 85 if I'd started a few years earlier). As I've generally bought them all at retail -- and endured significant pain in the process -- I would certainly be interested in purchasing cases as a group, mixing, a...

Also a bit of evergreen -- more like yew than pine, as i finished off the bottle and the fruit was gone.

The best thing about this wine is the 500ml bottle, which is now stripped of the label, cleaned, and awaiting a more constructive use.

2004 Barnard Griffin Syrah "Port"

This fortified Syrah from Washington State's Columbia Valley tries very hard to be a port. Its deep maroon color, inky translucency and heat are right on target, but it has the distracting attribute of coating the tongue and throat in a licorice-black color. It's quite fruity, with blackberries comi...

NV Croft Distinction Porto Special Reserve

A nice port of indescribable flavor, literally: it has a hint of smokiness to it, and a touch of brown sugar and boiled raisins, but beyond that it tastes like slightly aged port. It's nice, but nothing special, and nothing about it stands out. It's nose is pretty vibrant, but the tail is mostly hea...

Re: new member

Find the biggest challenge is finding aource of good and varied ports. Here we only have the LCBO, govnt monopoly, and although good would like more sources. Interestingly, the last time I was in montreal and crossed back to the US, I made out like a bandit at the duty free. In particular, i got so...

This is a fascinating topic, and one I hadn't considered much. Personally, I'm going to do a little research. There are two hard-core portugese restaurants (that serve their own community) here, and I'm going to have a chat with the bartender to see what they think of it all.

PS: On table orientation: Does anyone know an easy way to take a spreadsheet by the top left and bottom right corners and flip it over through 180 degrees through a diagonal axis so that Column A becomes Row 1 and vice-versa and everything in the middle ends up in its rightful place? I've a spreadsheet of most common ports that I see in the NY area, together with WS scores I picked up from PL and elsewhere. However, I'd suggest there are a few problems with doing this. 1. Graham's 2000
2. Churchill 91 (AA)/TFG88 (those 1/2 bottles!)
3. Croft 2003

Most of the cellar is ones-and-twos, even the Graham's i've only a 1/2 case of. (overall, there are probably more than 50 bottles down there, and not a full case in the bunch).

I compared notes with JJ Buckley customer service rep, who confirmed it with the guy who handles the warehouse and shipping.
