Dissention
Conky won't be the only one with a dissenting opinion on this. Commercialization of content, particularly content generated by other paying members, always smacks me as an abuse of the open potential of the Web. When I'm not drinking port (or sake), I work with megacorps to explain why -- in web com...

I too live by the baker's dozen rule, although I tend to apply it to half dozens to increase the spread of wines. I find it really unnerving to buy a case or a half case and stick it straight into storage without opening a bottle. The baker's extra bottle is the ideal solution. so half dozen +1 for...

The vargellas 88 i opened recently (a young wine) also showed flakes and fine sediment. as for turning: no-way! I try very hard to keep the bottles in the same position, even on the rare times when I move them. While the white paint marks might help, they are so infrequent these days that I just go ...

Re: Alas cheap doesn’t happen much in the US
I post what I find, UK and US. Alas cheap doesn’t happen much in the US. That's my finding as well. I think i got the Qd Bom. for 35 up here, but regardless the low quantity and perceived elitism of Port/"Old wine" keep prices astronomical. I'd like to say tariffs were a factor, but they d...

More bad news: Warre 1985 Dow 1985 2 Quinta do Vale Meao 2003 The 85's are from sohowines, sorry i wound up there early. The Vale Meao i think was a little underpriced at $50/bottle, and came from Total Wines in Hackensack NJ (a huge warehouse, whose main VP selection is overpriced relative to sohow...

that's awesome. I wonder about cloudy port though. The cheese cloth/muslin does not render a cloudy port clear, but my hunch is that a coffee filter would. Yeah, it's literally an attraction of the sediment particles to the filter. Metal doesn't have the same texture, microscopic fibers, as the pap...

Re: all non-slow things are approximately equivalent.
Thank you for the report, with pictures. It seems, again, that all non-slow things are approximately equivalent. Yes, basically if its slow it gives the particles time to adhere to the filter itself, but you'll note that even the coffee filter had a fine mist in it after I let it sit for a while (c...

1988 Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas
This is from the half bottles i picked up a while ago and was concerned about shipping temperature . This bottle was also used for the Metal Coffee Filter Decanting Experiment +0 Heavy wood smoke, lots of heat, cherries and a hint of pepper. Beyond that, not very earth-shattering of a port. Plenty o...

So this experiment is now underway, and I'll post pictures in a few minutes. As an ex-scientist, i worry about method and results. Setup: Half bottle of 1988 Taylor Fladgate Q-d-Vargellas VP emptied, including all sediment willing to go with the flow, into a liquid measuring cup. Volume: 1.5+ cups. ...

Hardy's Whiskers Blake Tawny Port
Awful awful awful australian port. I think they intentionally madeirized it because the stuff was closer to cream sherry than it was to port. This was caramel candy, with heat. Nothing further to say about this failed $16 experiment.

Mmm. I rather like the Vesuvio 2005 at the moment, it is rather delicious. Sadly, the others who tried this with me were not so taken. Alex: I love the 05 Vesuvio and if you are ever in need of getting someone to drink a bottle with you, give me a call. Axel There seems to be a bit of praise for th...

So most of us seem to have a combined Cheese and Port allergie. Not at all!! Cheese is compulsory when drinking port!!! I agree, tho like Ronnie I don't recommend a stilton or blue with Port. Rather, I'd say go for the nuttier flavors (aged goudas in particular), sheep milk cheeses (which are sharp...

I noticed something interesting about the croft distinction SR (and figured this was as appropriate a place for it as any): The T-stopper, made of cork, was bowed outward. I checked the bottle and found that, lo, the space at the top of the neck where the cork sits curved slightly inward as it reach...

This has been a very naughty port week, i'm up by 14 bottles and it's not over yet! Is that buying or drinking? Just buying, and i promised myself unless it was more 03 croft or 83/85, i wouldn't buy any more port for a while. But, as it happens, i passed Trader Joes in NYC yesterday and wa...
