Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

There I was (a few years ago), in BBR in london, right in the main room, with a bottle of 50's-ish Croft in one hand and a flashlight in the other. They went through their entire stock (all 4 bottles), and I turned em all down. I don't know who was more embarrassed, me with the flashlight or them wi...

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

Oh, and when purchasing (especially if in person), bring a good flashlight with you. Even the darkest of bottles can be illuminated. You can usually see yellowing/lightening of the port, look for level, and you can tell if the cork is in the bottle, etc.

It's probably been breathing for the last 10 years -- what's a day? :) Was it palatable in its new form?

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

I've had this experience -- going to open a bottle and the cork just slips right in. It wasn't forming much of a seal, and as others have said -- sometimes the capsule saves it, sometimes it doesn't. I've even opened one bottle that was corkless. Literally, no cork. Not in the bottle, not in the nec...

Re: How to serve a G70

If i am lucky, i have a friend, who's a professional sommelier (did i spell it right?), taste it with me. He's not much familar with ports (he knows more about wine and gins, particularly), but he should be way better than i am at describing it! :) It sounds like you're going to have a lovely eveni...

Re: Help for a newbie, Grahams '77 - decanting to serve NYE

I'm going to provide a different opinion. I'd keep it closed until 4-6 hours before hand, then decant. I don't think a Graham's 77 needs 2 days, or even 12 hrs. It's not the 80 or 85, which were both inky black vintages for a lot of ports (Graham's included). 77's are lighter, and tend to have a lot...

Re: Port for laying down - 2010, 2013

Have a look at the tasting notes section for the years you fancy, look out for notes by AHB (Alex) as I have found his notes reliable. DRT (Derek) suggestion about Vesuvio is a good one. Other reliable names are Fonseca, Dow, Taylor, Warre and Graham. There will be single Quinta wines from these pr...

Re: Port for laying down - 2010, 2013

I have reason, also, to lay down port from 2010 and 2013, but likewise found the pickings scarce. As I didn't buy it "on release," I'm waiting a bit to see how things evolve before buying some bottles. As you don't have ideal cellaring conditions, and its well past 2012 and 2015 (respectiv...

Only a year late -- so when will they dump GC 1980 on the market? I'd be happy to help them offload it :)

Re: Seeking tasters in NJ USA

Excellent!
January sounds good, but I was hoping even sooner. I'll take a look at my calendar and propose a couple days :), and we can scale the tasting size to the # of attendees. We're now living near the intersection of 287 & 78.

Seeking tasters in NJ USA

I recall there were some NJ tasters here -- but can't recall who. Could you remind me; and perhaps we can put together a little gathering?

Re: The NY sucks tasting sometime soon

I'm similarly inclined to start opening bottles, as we emerge from the newborn days and having finished macgyvering a wine cellar. There still aren't many overlapping opportunities for a tasting, tho. Manhattan M-Thurs, or perhaps out in NJ on a weekend. Port doesn't skype, so virtual tastings (tho ...

Re: 1908 da Silva colheita

A comment on this wine, there is considerable debate (and perhaps opinions could be added here) as to whether this was Colheita or VP. The label specified "Wine of the 1908 Vintage" but had no bottle date. Given its age, tawny characteristics were expected, and so we are left questioning w...

Sun 17 May 2015 (NYC): 'Atonal Port' Blind tasting

A lovely time was had last night at Left Bank in NYC as six of us (and a few drop-ins) enjoyed 8-ish Ports. The tasting was held blind, with submissions curated by jdaw1, and there were many surprises and few correct guesses. All brought a bottle, with a few gifts added in. Warre's 1984 LBV Barros 1...

Could placemats be prepared and someone let me know when they're printed? Partly done — see next quote. By request of Daniel, the placemats (and parameters by which made ). But it would be easier for Daniel if somebody else could print them. Could that be you? If anyone has access to printing, plea...

OK - a final FINAL gameplan... Please CONFIRM attendance as per the plan below and see first post. Given the complications, Mark's OK to drop the atonal theme and maybe join us another time. So now we have a simple blind theme, with 7 attendees (see first post - new attendee replaces Mark) at the o...

Re: 17th May 2015: Atonal music & port drinking in New York

I'm amenable to all this; and we simply split up which port we drink when. Attendance-wise, I count 6, possibly 7 if g-man would be willing to do the earlier time (i.e. we'd be doing 2:00-6:30 i suspect).

I would actually like to see an earlier start time as well as earlier finish time since it is on a Sunday. Anything I can do to assist please let me know. Ok, so let's do a littl...

Re: Is it misleading to sell a 79-88 colheita as 36 yo?

Thanks again for all your info. One of your comments sparks another question: 20 yo is just a flavour profile? Are there general flavour profiles that all producers adhere to? And 20 yo tawny does consist of tawny port all minimum 20 yo right? Or is that another whisky parallel gone awry? Others wi...
