Re: The Book, ‘Port Vintages’, is for sale

Book arrived; after some assistance from homebase. I saved "unboxing" until it could be done with some accompaniment, and selected a slightly older and less frequently seen wine for the occasion. There was a flaw in the plan, which i trust JDAW will spot immediately :) http://img.photobuck...

Took out the book (digitally) on seeing this thread, and so-far i'm enjoying the lead-up to that fateful chapter.

Re: New to Port - Got Carried Away at Auction

Hi, I am new to the forum, to port and am seeking some advice. I recently returned from a trip to the Douro and had not tried port before then. It seems I have a bit of an obsessive personality, as I have become hooked on the "idea" of vintage port, despite having only tried a single 2016...

Re: 5 V.Ports for Sale N.J.

Another consideration -- use them as your ticket to our port tastings. You're in NJ, we're in NJ (and NY too...), and tasting's are generally bring-a-bottle. Some are also "adopt" and others may want to pay you to adopt one of those, or split the cost with you. If you are interested, PM me...

Re: Benchmark got a load of port

Yeah, it mostly left me wondering "Who's selling that much port?" Who's even got that much port from reasonable vintages, with conditions that are more aligned to "i just want to drink it" rather than "i only buy to resell." It seemed either like a restaurant, or one of...

Benchmark got a load of port

Got a surprising email from Benchmark (a consigner). Seems like someone is unloading quite a bit of port (check out some of the quantities). also, I'm 99% sure they have a premium on top of these prices, but you can contact them to find out. [if this is in the wrong forum, pls move] "We are thr...

Gus -- where are you located? How were the bottles stored (side/upright, in box, etc)? Have they been transported around?

Re: Valuation???

You can try looking for a consigner (Benchmark) or for a wine auctioneer (zachys, acker merrall condit), or you can look for one of the "sell your wine" online sites/auctions. In any case, you'll be asked for details on how the wine was kept.

Re: Valuation???

That definitely explains the modern trappings on a a bottle labeled 1931, but is this a 1931 Niepoort "VP", or something else? What effect has Demijon>Bottle had (based on our tastings)? And has anyone seen this before from Niepoort? [edit] Looks like the answer is yes: http://www.theportf...

Re: Valuation???

So, my impression on looking at the photos is that the Garantia is of a current styling, the bottle looks molded (not blown) per the shoulder seam in photo 3, the labels look like a mishmash of modern and antiqued, and the capsule is similar to what Niepoort has used recently. I think i recall openi...

Re: The wine shed - a concept, and some horrible maths..

I've only ever heard it used (in the field of electronics) in relation to control of level change, rather than waveform delay (e.g. a thermostat set to turn off as the local temperature rises above 20C, which will then not turn on again until temperature drops below 19C, to avoid continuous switchi...

I also thought that gaps/breaks of any sort in insulation materials create a heat sink that badly impairs the overall efficiency of the intended insulation. Specifically, this is about bridging. Wood beams, nails, etc conduct heat much better than air (or insulation encapsulating air), as such they...

Re: The wine shed - a concept, and some horrible maths..

Water is by some margin the best source of thermal mass, at 4200J/L/C Stone or concrete varies a little but mostly comes in at just under half that figure. Something that intrigues me is the availability of stackable 10L jerrycans - often sold for camping purposes. These can be stacked to form a wa...

So, this post came at an ideal time as I'm in the midst of a cellar rebuild. Interestingly, my last cellar was made of two 6mil plastic sheets, with 3" between, and it required intermittent AC (5K BTU) to keep the space 15-20F lower than surrounding space. The new cellar has 4-5" dense cem...

Enjoyed the two bottles we bought from you a few years back (a suspicious looking exchange at Waterloo Station). A bit grassy, but that only required discretion in its application.

Re: Port in movies, dramas and tv series

An excellent thread. I shall have a think about this. Coincidentally I watched 'Babette's Feast' last night which prompted me to buy some Clos de Vougeot when I first saw it years ago. As did Jeanette Winterson, I understand. I actually thought there was some Port in babette's feast, no? Been so lo...
