Uncle Tom's Scoring System

...by Tom Archer My scoring system is designed to compare wines against their peers- So a VP is judged against all other VP's, a Colheita against all other Colheitas - etc. The first score relates to the ability of the wine to give immediate gratification, the second is your perception of how good ...

Decanting

The gentle art of decanting, by Tom Archer. 1) Why decant? Decanting serves two purposes. Firstly, to separate wine from sediment that has formed in the bottle, and secondly, to aerate wine that has lain in a bottle for a very long time. Very young ports do not benefit greatly from decanting, and i...

I hope you can make it along Graham, the more the merrier and it will slightly reduce jdaws stress about the volume of port allocated to each person and his misguided fear of potential wastage

jdaw, I seem to recall discussing this elsewhere but I have to reiterate that what looks like being £400+ per head for an offline, drinking 1 bottle of port each that may be dishwater,is is too rich for my blood. This is obviously a very exciting bottle but I really don't see it as being something t...

Re: Grape Varieties and Consistancy.

How do they end up with such a glorious product??? All different types of grapes, presumably not all ripening on the same day. Shifting yearly percentages of grape varieties, as one variety flourishes and another wanes. I think this precisely why the product is so good. The formula has endless perm...

I hope you're right, Tom. My local Tesco stocks Taylor's 1977 at £99 per bottle. I'm willing to bet they haven't sold any since it went on the shelf about 6 months ago. Hopefully the computer will kick in in December and I'll swipe the lot for £33 a bottle 88)

I think this is an excellent LBV and at that price you can't go wrong in buying all you can. It is still very youthfull and will age and improve for many years to come.

Hi Graham,

Welcome to the Port Forum.

I must get down to Tesco's soon - a few of us here picked up a stack of the 95's from Asda a few months ago at £5 per bottle. It is interesting that 2 major supermarket chains have now discontinued this. I wonder if Sainsbury etc will follow?
