Re: Food and Port

Um, sorry to get off the horse/putrid shark vibe.

I like Stilton and Anjou Pears with my port. Who was the madman who said Stilton doesnt go with port? When I die I want a bottle of vintage port in my arms and a big wedge of Stilton wedged into my rigor mortis clenched jaw.

Re: 2007 Vintage Port Declarations - discussion

Here is the direct blog entry from James Suckling: 2007 Vintage Port Magic Posted: 06:45 AM ET, May 01, 2009 I tasted 25 barrel samples of 2007 Vintage Port yesterday in a blind tasting at the Factory House in the center of old Oporto, Portugal. And I was very impressed. This is clearly a great vint...

Sorry to hear the news guys. I certainly have lost a lot of sleep worrying about my job and investments.

As if that were not enough, now we have the swine flu. What's next, loose nukes in Pakistan? Locusts?

Great price on the Dow's 03. I'd get all I could at that price.

Re: Cellar Defenders

For me a cellar defender is a wine that 1) is cheap enough to have a quantity on hand or 2) ready to drink. For my modest port collection I like to find ports from 1995 and earlier (excluding 1994) so that I always have at least a few that I can drink without guilt. Currently that means a few bottle...

Sorry I tossed the bottle over the weekend. It was a brown bottle with white writing and a more antique bottle shape with a long neck and fat, squat barrel.

Re: Sat 18 Apr 2009, New York: Classic years of T, F, W

I greatly appreciate the invitation to come to this and let the record show that my wife encouraged me to hop on a train or the infamous $20 Chinatown bus and go to this tasting. But I am afraid the scheduling gods are against me and I'll have to sit this one out. What a shame as your lineup is comp...

NV Krohn Embaixador

This ruby port was given to me in Portugal last year and I hauled it back here to the States. I've never heard of it before or since. I guess this is a crusted port though the word does not appear anywhere on the label. There is a light to medium amount of sediment. The color is full ruby, with bric...

Re: 2007 Niepoort Vintage Port (Cask Sample)

You know Andy, both you and Roy are very bad at jumping to wild conclusions. I love a good Portfight as much as the next guy, but in this case, let's deconstruct the charge. If Andy and Roy are very bad at jumping to wild conclusions, then Andy and Roy must be very good at jumping to well-supported...

Re: 2007 Niepoort Vintage Port (Cask Sample)

Let's not assume that intercontinental port forum commerce is a failure. That was a heck of a nice gesture and maybe the samples just needed a few weeks' peace and quiet to settle down. What can we send you guys from this side of the pond? Some California wines? Assault Rifles and ammunition? Mortga...

Re: Latest buy

In addition to my case of 1995 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Madelena, which should be arriving today or tomorrow, I also won at auction two bottles of 1990 Dow's Quinta do Bomfim. Both of these purchases will help me keep my hands off things that should be left alone. I nearly opened a 97 Vesuvio the oth...

Re: Vintage Charts

Great answers, thanks everyone. Another observation I've noticed here. It seems like a lot of you are extremely patient with your ports, giving the vintage ports something like 30 years to mature, whereas previously I had been shooting for 20 as a rule of thumb. Is it the case that most of you wait ...

I'm sure you will be able to find something. If you cant find a good answer here on the board, maybe ask the concierge at your hotel ahead of time. Or call the Portuguese travel and tourism office. Im sure they have one in London. On my first trip to Portugal years ago the Portuguese tourism NY offi...

So 1987, 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2005 are all worth a look.

How about any stinker years in the last 30? Any years that you just steer clear of?

I have to say discovering this site has been quite satisfying for me. I drink and share wine with a very nice online and offline group of people but none of them enjoy port like I do. You guys have the passion, expertise, and clearly tolerate esoteric exercises like this one. Cheers to you, :tpf: Bill

Re: Vintage Charts

Vesuvio nut is a worthy title. :) I did an impulsive thing. My memories of the 95 Smith Woodhouse got me salivating, and I found and bought a case for $29 a bottle from an online shop in New Jersey. I am low on cellar defenders and this purchase will tide me over for awhile. I posted my original SW ...

1995 Smith Woodhouse Madalena

A superb wine from an undeclared year. Deep, black and grapey, this is a black fruit powerhouse with a stunning nose of violets. Nicely sweet but not excessively so. The tannins are gripping but starting to smooth out after 10 years in bottle, and the finish is impressive and long. TN written in Sep...
