Re: 2000 Croft

Thanks for sharing. I've been looking at this VP for awhile now because for some reason it can be found at excellent prices here in the US. I think I will get some after reading your note. Bill

1995 Dow Bomfim

On opening, grapey, a bit spirity and disjointed. Medium tannins starting to resolve.

+24 hours, smooth, still spirity and if anything grapier. I don't think this bottle would have gotten any better with age. A good port but I expected more. 88 points

Re: New quizz

This gives a sense of what I am talking about. It is a smaller plane and not as fast as the Tornado, but similar.

Re: New quizz

Axel, In a previous life I was a US Marine Corps officer. I've got a soft spot for men and machines of war. One fond memory I have from the first Gulf War was British and Saudi Tornados flying about 50 feet above my position at the Kuwaiti border on their way to bomb targets . Nearly gave me a heart...

Re: Corks and bottles: Oporto versus London

Is it just me, or does the "bottled in Oporto" phrase contain just a whiff of the British superiority of centuries past? You know, from back in the day when the wines were mostly bottled in Britain because the Portuguese couldn't possibly do it themselves? These bottles have very soft cork...

I won four Niepoort 2003 Vintage ports at auction this weekend.

$50 each. Pretty good deal.

Re: Latest buy

85 Euro is, um, a bit less of a deal than 85$. Like 50% less of a deal. So I will amend my post above:

"Semi-sweet deal, Glenn!" Bill

Re: Latest buy

Ronnie, I know they used to have a Website I cannot find it. Valenca is a bit of a detour from Porto, about 2 hours due north of the city, not really on the way to or from Pinhau, and they dont speak English. The shop itself is pretty small, and the pricing is variable on the port. You definately se...

I'd say that at that price it is worth the risk. Great find.

Re: 2007 Vintage Port sales

From what I have seen so far the 2007s have been priced appropriately. In Portugal I saw Quinta do Vesuvio, Graham, Dow, and Warre 2007s all around 50 Euro each. For Portugal that is not bad. Here in the States, I just saw my first 2007 offering from one of the big internet wine stores: Dow at $59 a...

Re: 2000 Niepoort Vintage

Wow that is a great testimonial Roy. I'll guard my remaining bottles carefully. I got them fairly cheaply, too. 50 Euro each in Portugal. I'll definately be on the lookout for more.

2000 Niepoort

Extremely thick aluminum capsule: my capsule cutter couldnt cut through it. Very little sediment upon decanting. Medium purple, with a bit of bricking at the edges. Notes of cherries, strawberries, vanilla and menthol on the nose with a little too much of a spirity smell. Sweeter than average with a...

Re: How do you drink yours?

So maybe we should just drink our port through straws? :) I am skeptical that sucking through a straw like device gives any different taste than sipping it from a glass. Of course I am an American philistine. But in the spirit of homo universalis I will withhold further sarcasm until I have tried th...

Re: How do you drink yours?

Just when you thought you have seen it all... Can someone explain the advantage of these contraptions in drinking port? Ive seen something similar used as a gravy separator to remove the oils floating on the top, but I would think that you would want the opposite for a port, where the unwanted sedim...

Re: Is it wrong...

I'll do you one better. I drank my whole six pack of Vesuvio 97. I got it for a song at auction, drank a bottle, thought it was drinking great, and a few months later they were all gone. As I recall, it was good wine but I didnt feel like I was really drinking something that was destined to be great....

This is the first bottle of vintage port I ever bought and I still have it in my cellar. I've wondered from time to time when I will drink it, and now I will wait at least a few more years. Thanks for the note. Bill

Re: My virgin trip

I agree with every statement made by Derek and Ronnie. I had lunch recently at the Taylor lodge and not only is the view spectacular, the food is first rate. I had one of the better bacalau's I've had in recent years, a very thick slice of cod crusted with an olive and breadcrumb top. Yummy. My wife...
