1994 Graham vintage port

Deep in colour, almost opaque and holding into the rim. Sharp on the nose, with a sour bramble and redcurrant apparent. Medium- to full-bodied; sweet and full of cherry fruit. The tannins are soft, but lurk behind the fruit and plentiful structural acidity. The aftertaste is terrific, with a long an...

A small 1994 horizontal

On Tuesday, Nick, Derek and I met at the New Cavendish Club for dinner and a few glasses of port. We sipped our way through the 1994 offerings from Noval, Graham, Kopke, Martinez, Tesco (believed to be Quarles Harris) and Marks & Spencers (believed to be Morgan Brothers). There was also a small ...

The only cling film I was able to find was PVC based.

Re: Tuesday 8th Sep 09, London - 1994 Horizontal

Today I travelled from Chesterfield to London with 3 bottles of port, 2 empty half bottles, 6 Reidel port glasses, a decanting funnel, corkscrew and all the things you would need for a three day trip away from home. These are the sacrifices we make for the greater good  I am confused, what mo...

Seven glasses belongs on US Legal. Five or six on A4. Better information might therefore help. Updated . Also: No decanter labels (adding a page of DLs would reduce the size of the Titles); No placenames (or would Nick need them?). Neither BMHR nor CMAG will be attending. However, I will be bringin...

0-24-2-0? Glenn's up That's a lot of half bottles of something! 24 half bottles of Cos D'Estournel which were an attractive price and were just what I needed to replace my mature claret stocks - there are times when you have to have a decent claret to wash down the pasta and the last half bottle I ...

1988 Fonseca Guimaraens vintage port

Deep red in colour. Lovely sweet brambles on the nose, really delicious. Terrific body, full and flavoursome impact that is very impressive. Plenty of fruit in the midpalate and delicious complexity. Tannins are gentle but firm. Very big in the mouth. Big aftertaste, slightly hot but full of dry bla...

Re: 1977 Ferreira

Very, very light in colour, a golden orange with no hint of any red. A very faint nose of sour kumquat. Sweet, clover honey in the mouth, with some sweet grapefruit and lime providing an acidic backbone. A pleasant aftertaste, quite big and tingling on the edges of the tongue; long and pleasant. Ove...

Re: 1977 Kopke Sao Luiz

Kpoke. Slightly cloudy appearance; dark orange centre with a yellow / green rim. Subdued and muddy nose. Musty flavours in the mouth, tasting dusty and muddy. Some tart lime, offset by white sugar sweetness. The aftertaste is initially short and sour, but does come back improved and lasts a while. P...

Re: 2007 Quinta do Crasto (cask sample)

Deep black in colour, impenetrable centre, dark rim. Vivid blackcurrant nose, full of fruit and herbal complexity. Simple in its entry, fruit is restrained but ever-present. Quite light in weight but with plenty of gentle but grippy tannins. Limited in its complexity, but with plenty of acidity. A d...

Pale red centre, light orange on the rim. Sweet, candied cherry on the nose. Quite light weight on impact, thin and light in flavour. The mid-palate does develop some nice juniper nuances. Big aftertaste, good long length. Enjoyable enough. 85/100/ Drunk 26 August 2009.

Re: 1977 Morgan

Medium in colour, with a clear rim and a light centre. Very distinctive on the nose - full of sweet cherries and cloves and with a touch of chocolate. Sweet in the mouth; mildly fruity but with a good structure. Still a touch of tannin and lots of supporting acidity. Plenty of mid-palate complexity....

Re: JDAW Bottle 2, 26 Aug 09

Good red colour, but light in the centre and with a pale rim. Lovely mature nose, rich and spicy with lots of juniper venison stew. Rich and sweet in the mouth with big, moyuthfilling flavours and some terrific development. Quite a big wine. A burn on the immediate aftertaste, but this is quickly re...

Kopke. Deep red in colour, clear centre and with a pale orange rim. Slightly stinky nose, with the bottle stink dominating other smells. Sweet in the mouth, but the bottle stink flavours show through the soft and well integrated fruit. Quiet a heavy weight to the body of this port, showing a strong ...

Marks & Spencer's own label. Light in colour, but still with plenty of red although a very clear centre. Mature nose , with lots of all spice and sweet fruit. Soft and gently fruity flavours in the mouth. Flavoursome and mature. A gentle and persistent aftertaste. Enjoyable port. 89/100. Drunk 2...

Re: DRT Bottle 1, 26th Aug 09

Pale rose colour with a mature pink rim. Spicy and herbal nose, full of rosemary and damsons. Sweet damsons and white cherries on entry. The flavours are full of fruit but lack some complexity. Patience does allow some development to appear. Medium in weight. A hot burst of swallowing and then slowl...

Re: Aged Ruby/Tawny

It's the sort of thing that is worth buying and trying if the price is right. Only after you have tried them will you know whether the changes which occur with extra bottle age are ones which you enjoy or not. Do you like your colheita freshly bottled or older bottlings? Do you like your (late bottl...

Re: How do you drink yours?

I must admit, I am quite looking forward to seeing port drunk from port sippers. I've always been extremely sceptical about them - but then I was about Riedel's glasses until I tried them for myself.

And I do admit that drinking Coke from a glass is very different from drinking Coke through a straw.
