Re: 2007 Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc

I used to be a big fan of Cloudy Bay SB, but became disillusioned with them in the early noughties. A combination of price increases and what I felt was lower quality led me to abandon CB in favour of some South African producers - I love the Klein Constantia SB; and their 100% Semillion is stunning...

I quite liked this port, I thought it was a step up in quality from the 2001 vintage.

Re: 21st June 2010, horizontal of 1982

Sample 2: A nice ruby red. A dusty nose hiding some red fruits. Cranberry juice? A nice smooth mouth-filling Port with good structure, lots of tannin and a very dry finish. I like this but keep getting a sense that it is slightly corked. My guess is Sandeman 82. Sample 4: A very nice dark ruby colo...

It's also nice when chilled and mixed with tonic instead of using white port.

Re: 2003 Dow's Crusted Port

My only complaint about Crusted Port - is that I drink them too young! I am convinced that Crusted Ports will age well, but I never manage to resist them when they are sitting in the cabinet waving to me saying "Me next! Me next!"

Re: 1960 Martinez

Almost as dark in colour as the Warre 1960 shown alongside. Mature redcurrants on the nose; quite hot and full of dust and nutmeg. Slightly musty entry, with good flavours but what seems to be something of a characteristic bitterness from the vintage. Not balanced, still with some tannins showing th...

Re: 1960 Warre

Darkest wine of the final flight (Rei, Dow, Graham, Warre, Martinez). Not much on the nose, quite muted. Modest impact, simple and restrained flavours - sweet and raisiny. Subdued aftertaste; finish is of good duration but limited in volume. Unimpressive. 84/100.

Re: 1960 Dow

Middling in colour; looking mature but not tired. Fairly closed on the nose, with some spicy redcurrant. Lovely texture and full flavour, but quite straightforward and without much complexity. Drawing some air over the wine does allow more complexity to develop. The aftertaste takes time to arrive, ...

Re: 1960 Quinta do Rei

Messias owned Quinta. Light centre, the lightest in colour of the final flight (Rei, Dow, Graham, Warre, Martinez). Attractive and elegant nose - full of dusty junipers. Good texture, quite thick with modest initial impact. Slightly simple, but terrific texture across the palate and all the flavours...

Re: 1960 Noval Nacional

Slightly darker than the Noval shown alongside, with a clear centre. More heat and aniseed on the nose than the Noval, but otherwise a very similar bouquet with plenty of marmalade and Seville oranges balanced by a lovely floral elegance. Light impact, medium bodied with plenty of raspberries but su...

Re: 1960 Noval

Good colour, clear centre. Peaches and white cherries all over the very big nose. Terrific texture; lovely entry but afterta big wave of sweet red fruit the ripe orange acidity charges through. Massive aftertaste, full of mature sweet fruit with a very long finish. Super port. 91/100. My wine of the...

Re: 1960 Taylor

Pale, clear centre, lightest of the flight (which included Croft, Fonseca, Noval and Nacional). Strange, soapy or perhaps stewed fruit on the nose and with lots of vanilla. Good thick texture on impact, but flavours come through quite thinly. Lots of vanilla pod flavours. Acidic and aggressive on th...

Re: 1960 Fonseca

Quite deep colour, with a dark centre. Virtually nothing on the nose, perhaps a little subdued redcurrant jelly. Very dry in the mouth but with good levels of fruit. An interesting bitterness from the high levels of acidity - like that found in a grapefruit. Gentle aftertaste, with a big and slightl...

Mid red colour, darkest of the flight (which included Fonseca, Taylor, Noval and Noval Nacional). Slightly hot on the nose, with dusty rapsberries showing. Full bodied, but very spicy with the remains of the tannins showing through the redcurrant. Nice layering and worth holding on the palate for so...

Mid red, mature in colour with a light centre. Restrained, somewhat soapy nose, but a little flat. Big aftertaste and a big finish that lingers a...
