Owen, there was no offence intended. It was meant as a compliment.

2006 Herdade dos Grous

Most wines you find in shops outside Portugal are from the Douro. Thus I'm always happy when I spot a non-Douro wine. This one is from the "civilised supermarket". It's a blend of Aragonez, Syrah, Alicante Bouschet and Touriga Nacional form the Alentejo, made in a lagar and matured for nin...

You're right, of course. The thread should be renamed Cultural Studies.
Good suggestion. Or we might name it "A place for the Highbrow" :)

Re: Jeremy Clarkson

Have you ever tried Heine? Of course, Marx was a fan. But I've never got round to him myself. Heine is a good suggestion. He wrote intellectually sharp satire, which I think Owen will like. In addition to that, he wrote a lot of prose which is easier to translate than poetry. By the way: somehow Ow...

Re: Jeremy Clarkson

i thought I would take advantage of the hiatus in this cultural thread to introduce a cultural concern of my own which I was originally going to address to Andre only. But on consideration I think I should throw it open to all comers. How should I approach the poet Rilke? I have an anthology, with ...

A very fine tasting note that makes you want to have a glass too. One question though: isn't "medium weight but full-bodied" a contradiction?

Re: Gould Campbell

Does the discontinuation only apply to VP or to anything GC makes? They make (or made) a good 10 Year Tawny as well. If I remember correctly, the last GC 10 Year Tawny I saw in a local shop was bottled in 2014. So this might be a clue that they still make wines at the lower end of the scale.

I think Clarkson has "A Talent to Annoy", though I fear that this joke is an insult to Nancy Mitford.

Re: Where are you?

When I was in my early twenties and not yet into wine, I pictured myself on a Caribbean beach, sunshine, blue sky and water, lying in a deckchair sipping banana daiquiri (made with fresh bananas, not with banana juice). I think this was inspired by the opening scene of "Our man in Havana" ...

2012 Gunderloch Messidor Beerenauslese

Gunderloch is a VDP-producer from Rheinhessen (although they don't use the VDP grape eagle for marketing this wine). This BA is a blend of Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. It was fermented and matured in stainless-steel vats. The grapes came from the whole Rheinhessen region, which is un...

1996 Château Rauzan-Gassies

A Deuxième Cru of Margaux. D +0h: cork comes out completely intact, not so much deposit in the tea filter or the bottle as one might expect of a 19-year-old wine, smells of blackberry and raspberry D+1,5h: dark as ink, yet at the rim already quite cherry red, smells intensively of blackberry, smoke ...
