Re: "Port-like" but not technically port?
All the 'ports' I have tried from outside Portugal have been ghastly aberrations. Discuss. I opened a bottle of California "Port" some years ago. It resulted in one of only two times my iron-stomached, titanium livered, alcoholic friend poured a bottle down the drain. The experiment will ...

Re: Finding a new favourite vintage port
I thought that it was all of a piece with my encroaching 'old fart' status that I wanted consistency rather than variety. In this sense the concept of a house port may also be indicative of incipient senility, but I shall rage against the dying of the light by buying some reasonable Quarles Harris ...

Re: How to end up £200 lighter after a week of heavy drinkin
I once booked a flight from Sydney to Perth, Australia. Didn't realise that the website I thought I scored a cheap deal on had the American form of date i.e. month first, as opposed to the British standard of day then month. My wife was not amused when we tried to check in  For what terrible ...

Are you thinking of Massandra? Is that from Crimea? Very possibly so. I remember an auction catalogue of a collection of 19th century wines described as Crimean port which I saw about 25 years ago when I first became besotted with/by port. As I recall, the wines were produced for the Tsar's cellars...

In fact the sparklers from there are very popular on cellar-tracker  As I recall, there used to be some Crimean port wines as well - or what they call...

Although their payment system is inconvenient for me, I have not had any problems with Farr, and have bought quite a few cases from them over the last couple of years.

As a doctor - in urban legend, at least - is reported to have said: "If you give up smoking, you'll live an additional 5-10 years" "If you give up drinking, you'll live an additional 5-10 years" "If you eat healthy foods, you'll live an additional 5-10 years" Why on ear...

Fonseca 1985, ex cellars, one Imperial and some magnums. Very good to hear that you finally got this one, and it would be interesting to hear how it compares to a regular bottle of the same year. Does anyone have any tasting notes from bottles of this size? Also, thank you for getting the law chang...

Tentatively, please add me to the list. Will be through London at about that time, but will not know the final details until probably mid-May. I have 97s I can bring, as well as some 91s and 92s in the UK. Would either have to adopt for the other two themes, or order up something from Davy's and hav...

Re: Decanting in Decanter
In agreement with Alex on the younger ports. If one feels compelled to drink them, my impression is that they tend to show better a day or two or three after decanting, rather than an hour or two or three. I also question the Decanter's view that decanting affects the aroma more than the taste - if ...

Re: What ARE we drinking for 2013 Xmas?
Thoughts, gentlemen? Since you eliminate the 94 Vesuvio for youth, I'd also save the 2000; Given your selection, I'd go 63,70,77,85,92 (D,G,G,T,F) instead to give the same number of ports, pretty much equally spaced, and all 21yr+. Admittedly it duplicates the Graham, so I'd probably obtain perhaps...

Re: What ARE we drinking for 2013 Xmas?
Lots and lots of port. That being said, am thinking of a bit of an unusual - a little of everything - tasting for one evening with 7-8 people (although the port may last for a couple of days). As I no longer have anything older than 1963, am thinking a port from five decades with each being from a d...
