Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
Some early thoughts about placemats. GuildfordDemo-Normal appears to be a sans-serif typeface, in which the digit 1 is an unadorned vertical line. That means spacing between a 1 and any digit looks much wider than the spacing between any non-1 pair of digits. Me no likey. Also, the Circlearrays don...

Re: Declared - and declarable, some sums..
If 30% of years are declared, what is the probability that a given year is part of a consecutive declaration? Easy maths. Pick a year that is declared: say x . There is a 70% chance that x ”“1 wasn’t declared, and a 70% chance that x +1 wasn’t declared, so a 49% chance that neither neighbour was dec...

As you are aware, we purchase private collections. We have found that some people store their wines in professional wine storage lockers, while others have custom built wine cellars in their home. We only purchase private collections that have been kept in temperature controlled storage, but some o...

Not if it will cost me even the slightest awkwardness with the boss. I’ll save my special passes for horizontals of general declarations, or at least interesting years.DRT wrote:Anyone for a 43 bottle 1982 horizontal?

Re: What constitutes a "General Declaration"?
It is quite impressive that the port producers of 1970 knew exactly what you would find to be yummy 39 years after making their wines. That is a skill that not many people have. Actually, several people have it, but not in all years. They did in 1970 excellent vintage. Likewise 1963, 1966, and 1985...

Re: What constitutes a "General Declaration"?
A general declaration is a year such that, three decades later, there are at least a dozen houses that declared a port such that, if one of those ports was opened for me I would say something like ‟yummy thank you”.
This includes 1970, but excludes 1931, 1982 and 1975.

I once had a Saturday job at Dixons, a UK retailer of electronics. The name, Dixons, had been selected randomly from the telephone directory so the company is not necessarily related to the port of the same name owned by Morgan.

Please to learn that it isn’t the port that’s Irish, only the location.
