Re: "The Don" Restaurant--City of London

what vegetarian dish do you pair with port? An obvious answer would be cheese. (But that doesn’t always work well.) I’ll admit that being vegetarian puts me at a disadvantage in terms of Port drinking, but Julian is quite right about cheese. Also many deserts/puddings go quite well (which is fortun...

I went there about a month ago. It’s a rather disappointing place. The bar is nice enough, but the detritus that gave it its name is long gone, and prices are very much on the high side. Despite numerous signs suggesting otherwise, the only Port on offer was the customary bottle of Cockburn’s Specia...

I haven't been but have looked at their price list of ports which are enormously over-priced. Ah yes, just found your post on that. It’s a bit of a shame. Were they massively over-priced at the lower end, too? Considering it’s location, I wouldn’t mind so much paying the standard 30% mark-up on som...

"The Don" Restaurant--City of London

I walked past this place last night and was wondering if anyone from :tpf: had been there. Apparently it is in the old Sandeman cellars and claims quite a bit selection of ports by the bottle. What drew my attention to it was a big sign with a picture of the Don, which, I gather from their website h...

Alex, I didn't think there would be much interest in that functionality, but it should be quite easy to sort that out. As for the second issue, I don't think there's any easy way around it but I don't think there are too many duplicates in the forum. Perhaps it will be improved once I add dates/orig...

Great work Jacob! I would like to see the poster's name and original post date included. That would give a better overview if there are more than one results for a specific port. A couple of remarks on producer names: Gonzalez Bypass (althoug funny) must be Gonzales Byass Osborn e Poças is listed...

Just had a play with it....Excellent. I would love a score option, but it's very good as it is. If I've praised it enough? A suggestion. The look of it needs jazzing up. That funny paisley design doesn't do it for me, and it might benefit from more stylish and distinctive font. But of course that i...

Drat, I’ve just noticed that “Nacional† without “Noval† is now not being picked up, for some reason. I’ll correct that when I get a chance (I think it was caused by not wishing to get false positives on single-variety Touriga Nacional ports).

Finally, I think I’ve made some progress on this script and turned it into something which might be useful. I’ve uploaded a new version to http://www.jacob-head.com/tpf and would be grateful for any feedback. The main changes are: 1) Additions to and corrections of the details of a number of produce...

By all means: do. I didn't mean to say their VP's are not good, just that the LBV is very good for the money. As is the case with more single quinta producers (Crasto, Passadouro) the vintages are good, very pleasant ports, but not fit to compete with the top league. It was more a question of prior...

I haven’t had any of their VP but it’s a shame if that’s the case; I was quite tempted to seek out a bottle after this!

I am impressed that I managed to type that last night, considering the state I was in. 2001 Quinta do Infantado LBV (unfiltered)

I felt my evening celebrating the end of the Graduate Diploma in Law (and possibly the worst 8 months of my life) would not be complete without some Port. I wanted to open something quite good but which would not be wasted after having at least 7 hours in the pub and this seemed to fit the bill. The...

Axel, it's interesting that you say that about their LBVs. Rozès seem to have an unusual pricing policy, with their VPs being quite cheap and the LBVs relatively expensive (so there is little difference in price between the two). I suppose it might be a reflection of Port tastes in France. Anyway...

Would it not be better to use a dedicated bottle-resealer than a T-Cork? Something like one of these:

The seal of a T-Cork never seems terribly tight, especially if it is being reused on multiple occasions.

Re: Poças, surely.

Porto Pocas/Pocas Po ç as, surely. (Though my code strips away all diacritical marks before comparison, adding them back for recommended names.) Ah, yes, indeed :D That’s the approach I’ve been taking, though I think there might be some clever PHP function which does it automatically. I might hav...

Re: Gins

I spent most of this afternoon alternating between Gordon’s and Hendrick’s and Tonic and concluded that although Hendrick’s is still my preferred gin, there really is almost nothing in it (or I have no palate left…). Rather than produce endless varieties of premium gin, what I wish the distillers wo...

Thanks for that. That’s extremely helpful. The “Quinta† issue is not particularly serious as the script looks for the main notable word in the title (e.g. “Noval†, “Quinta Da Noval† and even something like “Chateux Noval† would all produce “Quinta Do Noval† as a result) so any mistakes in Portu...

Alex, variations would be good: I intend half the script to be portable so it can be used for other projects (such as building a cellar database from a plain text list) where more liberal naming conventions will apply. Also, despite everyone’s best efforts, I already need to include quite a few spel...

Not the case Jacob. The vast majority still do this by hand. Even the major players on the island still use hand cut stencils. I've seen it done in person a couple of times now. There is a picture of this on my homepage with a handcut gold-plate stencil at Barbeito. The only one that I know for sur...

I wonder if this affected the first edition, but my copy of the Mayson is badly let down by a lack of proof-reading. There a lots of places with incorrect page-references (or references to “page 00†) and, one place gives the amount of port produced by independent shippers as “L1.5% [check ?]†! Apa...

That’s a fair point. Arial (and impact) certainly aren’t in the same league as the others for inappropriateness in print. I have to say, though, that I just find Arial and Helvetica quite dull as choices for anything, when there are lots of more interesting sans-serifs out there.
