Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March

Some early thoughts about placemats. GuildfordDemo-Normal appears to be a sans-serif typeface, in which the digit 1 is an unadorned vertical line. That means spacing between a 1 and any digit looks much wider than the spacing between any non-1 pair of digits. Me no likey. True; I might redo their k...

Re: Declared - and declarable, some sums..

I’m not quite sure that I understand why the shippers felt a need to declare ’75 in ’77 even if too much of it was produced. Surely a lot of the weaker casks could have been turned into LBVs or kept to be blended into Crusteds, thus increasing the quality of the wine which was part of the declared v...

Re: What constitutes a "General Declaration"?

A general declaration is a year such that, three decades later, there are at least a dozen houses that declared a port such that, if one of those ports was opened for me I would say something like ‟yummy thank you”. This includes 1970, but excludes 1931, 1982 and 1975. Shouldn't the term "gen...

I think Jacob may take on this task for this tasting. Works for me. Jacob: please confirm that it works for you. I will do my best :) Will do, it is highly likely that I will open the bt 24h in advance if the 91 Vargallas is shipped in time if not told otherwise. Can we do the Decanting at the Crus...

Re: Drying decanters

they are quite strong enough that a decanter can be left on them safely. This is sadly not the case for magnum-sized ship's decanters. Ask mine, it toppled over and broke its neck :crying: Hmm...that’s what I was worried about, particularly for my main one which is quite a tall conical thing. But I...

Re: Discussion: Guide to cost sharing of bottles

It's best to have a general rule of thumb, then deviate as necessary for each tasting. But with regard to sharing costs, the rule is that something fair will happen. :D Are you suggesting we deviate from the rule that something fair will happen? If so can I think we have the financing of a complete...

Re: Drying decanters

I use a decanter dryer, which is basically just a vertical metal rod with a rubber stopper on the end which holds the decanter upside down. When not drying decanters it is used to hold kitchen roll. I've been thinking about acquiring one of these but I've always been a bit worried about their robus...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March

I seem to recall you decanted the last 1967 about mid-night and my experience Friday / Saturday this weekend suggested similar times for the 1978. I am open to suggestions from others though. That was principally due to necessity and I did wonder whether (as it ended up being quite light) a decant-...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March

It’s probably a bit early to be worried about this, but what do people think about decanting times? My experience of the younger Vargellas has always been that they need quite a lot of time but I’m less sure about the older ones. I presume that it would be good if Ben and I are aim for about the sam...

Re: A complete vertical of 20th century vintages of Taylor

Incidentally, there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent function to split the tasting notes over more than one sheet! What about GlassesOnTastingNotePages ? Hmm!hadn’t explored that one (and I’m afraid I can’t quite work out how that parameter works)!but glad to see that all eventualities are catered ...

Re: A complete vertical of 20th century vintages of Taylor

If this is turning into a serious attempt at organising a non-serious Taylor vertical, perhaps the non-serious attempt at organising a serious vertical ought to be split somewhere more appropriate? On the serious point, is it worth baring in mind that there’s a Vargellas vertical in March and the ‟s...

Re: A complete vertical of 20th century vintages of Taylor

Placemats: use the GlassesOnSheets parameter to split the glasses over many A4 pages. Unfortunately, I couldn’t generate the contents of that parameter with a single regex, so I took the path of least resistance and substituted 2 for 4 in the /PaperType parameter :) Incidentally, there doesn’t seem...

Re: A complete vertical of 20th century vintages of Taylor

I'm still slightly confused as to why it could not be an 1815-2006(7?) vertical. If we included a Friday afternoon and evening as well as Morning, afternoon and evening on Saturday and Sunday that would give us 8 sessions of 18 bottles = 144. That would allow us to amend the title to a snappier &qu...

Re: A complete vertical of 20th century vintages of Taylor

The non-serious part was that it should be a one-day tasting. AHB needless to say was entirely serious about the idea of a complete Taylor vertical. But not in one session. A complete 20th C. Taylor vertical would be a mere 27 bottles; it’s adding the Vargellas that causes it to be a lunch+dinner p...

A legitimate add-on to this tasting would be magnums v. 75cl v. 37.5cl as many Taylor vintages were bottled in both of those.

And we really ought to compare British v. Oporto bottlings.
