That's an interesting point of view. But I wonder if a filtered port that has already undergone a lot of oxidative aging in barrels during many many years will still age perceptibly in the bottle. Personally I don't think a few years of difference between bottles will be noticeable, but I don't know...

I quite like the Warre's Warrior, in my experience it's one of the ruby ports that improves with decanting. When I tried the Warrior for the first time (and only time, so far) I remember being pleasantly surprised. It does indeed do justice to its reputation of being one of the better rubies. I did...

Was wondering, when do you call someone experienced when it comes to port? If you had to guess, how many different ports have you guys had the pleasure of tasting?

I happened to run into that signature while I had already achieved the rank Fonseca Bin 27 but I liked it so much that I decided to use it... But when is someone no longer a newbie? I don't think that rank based on the number of posts alone is really a reliable measure, if you know what I mean . And...

After reading all this I think I will have to do another 1:1 comparison in the near future. I'm quite sure I can find another Otima 10yot bottled in 2006 at the back of the shelf where I found the one I have now. One would expect a supermarket to use the FIFO system, but when it comes to stuff that'...

blended port, different bottling years

In this post I compared two different 10yots by the same shipper. One of them was bottled in 2006, the other in 2007. Because we're talking about blended ports I didn't think it really made a lot of difference...but is that really the case? Are there actually any noticeable differences between (e.g...

Re: Same house, different brands

An interesting thing is that there's also a 10yo Tawny from Conqueror, if that's as good as the Warre's Otima 10 then it must be really good value for money... I see another comparison coming... That comparison is now 88). Warre's Otima 10yot (┚¬12/50cl) vs Conqueror 10yot (┚¬12/75cl...

Why else would people prefer VPs made from foot trodden grapes over mechanically trodden grapes?

I've tried several combinations of some blue cheeses (Stilton, Roquefort) and Dutch cheeses (Gouda, and blue) and port. But IMHO most of the ports I tried so far seemed to combine better with not to sweet chocolate than cheese...

I'm "hiding" in the Southern parts of the NL. Unfortunately, I have to pass. For me a full working week means Monday-Friday. The trip to Utrecht would simply take too long to leave any useful time before having to return home again.

If I find somewhere to buy this whilst I'm in Utrecht then I will give it a go. I quite like the filtered LBV but it is no match for the unfiltered. You will be looking for a supermarket by the name "Albert Heijn", then. But that shouldn't be very hard, they're strewn across this country ...

Here I compared this with a Conqueror LBV 2001.

I'm enjoying it right now. The one I'm tasting seems to be a bit more fruity and I didn't notice the heat (but I must say I didn't start until decant +2). Right now (decant + 3.5) it's indeed very enjoyable.

Same house, different brands

A question by uncle tom in this thread made me curious about similarities between different brands of the same shipper, and more specifically between a famous brand and a buyers own brand (BOB). In the same thread I (a little off-topic) compared two standard tawnies of the same shipper that turned o...

Bricking

I've seen the term "bricking" being used several times now. What does it mean? Is it a reference to a "brick colour" and if so, what colour would that be? The colour of the old-fashioned rustbrown/reddish bricks?

Right now I have two 2001 Late Bottled Vintages which were both bottled in 2007 by the Symingtons. One is a buyer's own brand and one a famous brand. I also have two identical decanters (ideal for 1:1 comparisons). When they're both empty (probably soon ), I'm planning another comparison...

According to the referred theory, there would be a negativ correlation between VP and LBV in former years. Is there such a predominant correlation? Or are there too much variables as market politics? What's you guys experience/opinion? I'd agree with the negative correlation because if I were a shi...

Have been into port for about 6 months. Slowly learning. Welcome! Nice to welcome someone relatively new to port. Like you, I've only just discovered port, and yes, the learning curve can be slow at times, but rewarding nevertheless... Hopefully, this forum will add something to your port experience!

Well Im not really sure if a 20-40.000 liter vat, which is averagely 25 years in service really leaves a tastable mark on a wine, but I leave it open to discussion. Axel That's probably the reason why LBVs are aged in huge vats instead of in small wooden casks. To be somewhat VP-like, the ageing ca...
