Butler Nephew & Co.

Alex: you’re good. Who are Vasconcellos, and why no website for them?

Thursday’s port: RP85 or G80?

At New York’s lunch time tomorrow, that being Thursday 20th March 2008, I will decant a bottle of port for unfancy family drinking in the evening. Should the port be Graham’s 1980 or Ramos Pinto 1985? Background: we have enjoyed several RP85s in the last few months, and have two remaining. But, in c...

Non-English: Nederlands

Actually, in sending invitations to the speakers of Deutsch and Nederlands, I’ve discovered that TPF has more Dutch-speakers than German. Dutchies: please consider yourselves asked the same question, with Nederlands replacing Deutsch.

Non-English: Deutsch? (And Nederlands?)

TPF has a small number of German speakers. Should there be, on the front page underneath Miscellany Corner , a new section called Non-English , initially featuring just Deutsch ? Of course, such a section would be worthwhile only if it was likely to contribute to an influx of more German speakers. M...

Butler & Nephew

What happened to Butler Nephew? There is mention on the web of B&N being bought by Vasconcellos, who also don’t have a website. What happened to either of them? And is the name correctly written with a ‟&”, ‟and”, or neither?

When? What? Where?

When? Please suggest early-May dates. What? It seems that people aren’t objecting to O & O . Please say what treats you have. And where? One possibility, date dependent, is, again, the increasingly traditional Bistro Citron : Unless there’s a better plan, we’ll meet at the place that is becoming...

67 Wine; Tavern On The Green

Thanks for letting us know Roy. Three years ago I hosted a family meal at Tavern On The Green . Food entirely ordinary, at best. But an impressive tipping policy: the check had two lines for tips, one for the ‘Captain’ and one for the lower-ranked staff. Maybe TOTG has improved in the interval. 67 W...

Missing accents

After seeing your headline, claiming that there was a six-pointer at St Andrew's, I was assuming that both sides had played their Joker. Supporting a side that has not been in the Premiership for a while, I had no idea what the current rules were and taking the juicy bits from Jeux Sans Frontieres ...

LBVs: New York, Thursday 8th May 2008?

With planning for the April tasting suggesting LBVs, let’s do something a little more random in May. Bottles of Barros 1947 and 1952 are ‘cluttering’ my collection: would there be interest in a theme of O ld and O dd, though vintage nonetheless? I’ll be in the UK the third week of May (including a t...

Are you two minutes late? The first post is labelled “Posted: 16:15 Wed 20 Jun 2007†, where my timezone is GMT-5hr, which would be 21:15 GMT or 22:15 BST.

Not that it helps at all with Conky’s sensible question.

Best few ports

Good subject. But I verify that “Best† means “best at time of drinking† rather than “best quality when this wine eventually reaches its peak†. (IMHO makes a huge difference for Fonseca 1985.) Best four, in alphabetical order, were Fonseca 1963 , Fonseca 1966 , Fonseca 1970 , Noval 1963 (Queens’ C...
