1963 Cockburn
Decanted 3 hrs. 30% opacity, bronze orange. Nose is lively, a freshness, cherries and bubblegum with a little spirit in the background. In the mouth, very clean, sweetness of cherries and burnt sugar. Heat mid to late palate and a sticky finish with a nice long aftertaste. Julian would describe this ...

90% opacity. Bit closed on the nose. More structure than the '04, good balance of acidity, fruit, tannin. Nice port.

Re: 2003 Vesuvio
90% opacity, deep red. Amazing port. Lovely chocolate mouthfeel, syrupy and smooth, great balance, soft tannins. One teeny weeny criticism would be a tiny lack of acidity.

Re: 2001 Vesuvio
85% opacity, deep red. Sweet floral notes and chocolate on the nose. Heat mid to late palate with a tannic finish. Mid-weight, quite sweet, chocolate. Missing some balance. Nevertheless I did enjoy this port...would like to try another time as I suspect this could be very good.

Re: 2000 Vesuvio
85% opacity, dark red. Mild heat on the palate plus a tannic finish. Fruit is there, body a little light. Feels like this one might run out of steam before old age.

75% opacity, dark red. Nose a bit stewey. Sweet, light, lack of structure. Some mild tannins but no acidity. One of the weaker tasted this evening.

Re: 1995 Vesuvio
70% opacity, deep dark red. Tannic, fruity, but a little light, not much structure/backbone, lacking acidity. One of the weaker Vesuvio on the night, for me.

70% opacity, deep red. A little closed on the nose for me. In the mouth, some pepper, but also fabulous sweetness - rich milk chocolate. Very nice port.

Re: 1992 Quinta do Vesuvio
70% opacity, deep red. Good balance, good tannins, fullness, a tiny edge of acidity in the finish. Dark fruits all the way through. Licking my lips after this one! I liked this a lot - I think it will improve with more time.

Re: Wed 24 Feb 2016, B&F, Vesuvio 1989 to 2013
What brands of port were Vesuvio grapes used in before the Vesuvio brand was launched? The Symingtons bought the estate just before the '89 Vesuvio release. Prior to that the estate was part of the Ferreira stable and I think I recall Johnny saying that the grapes were used variously in some Ferrei...

Many thanks to Wolfgang and the many others who provided the bottles to make this complete Vesuvio line-up. Certainly the most bottles I have attempted to taste in one sitting (and on a school night too!) Really great evening and great company. Good to see new faces (welcome Dia), and good to meet J...

Re: 1991 Vesuvio
40% opacity, warm dark red. Nose has something synthetic, hospital-like. Suspect TCA. In the mouth, again something a little synthetic, chemical tasting. Still drinkable, but not ideal.

I'll take 50 please. Slight preference for d, on the basis that the dimensions are more suitable for packing 14 in a wooden wine box.
