Julian, I have no objection to incorporating the two Barros bottles if we can't find any more old and odd vintage ports.

I have nothing on hand that would qualify other than a 1952 Graham Malvedos crusted port.

Two Proposed 2009 NYC Tastings

Niepoort vertical, for which I can contribute 1987, 1992 and 1994.

1980 horizontal, for which I can contribute Dow (magnum), Taylor, Warre, Graham and Taylor.

As I will be in sunny California, I must decline this opportunity.

As some folks from Siberia are coming, perhaps you can invite Sarah Palin.

Re: Proposal for a tasting in 09

I think that it would be hard to get a lot of 30 year comparisons that would include mature ports on both sides.

What about a variation on the theme? A thirty year vertical perhaps. As Jeff's favorite house is Fonseca, what about a thirty year Fonseca vertical, starting in 1970?

Re: Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

Pop and pour? How are we supposed to do this at a restaurant? Are we going to whip out coffee filters, cheesecloth and funnels? Somehow, I don't see it. And I certainly would not trust the waiter or sommelier to do a proper job in decanting. My expectation would that we would be either drinking a lo...

Re: Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

I used to have two types of INAO/ISO3591 glass. Some with the rolled edge, and some with a thinner edge. They became muddled one tasting, and then my muddled set became muddled with your two boxes of rolled-edges. If you have the time and enthusiasm, please could I recover my (slightly-better) thin...

Re: Old & Odd, New York, Friday 7th November 2008

I'll be there although 7:30 pm is getting mighty close to my bedtime.

On decanting, I'll decant right before jumping on the subway, i.e., about an hour before we start tasting.

What are we doing about glasses? Is the restaurant providing enough or should we bring some?

We have four bottles and three tasters. We could use a few more bottles and a few more tasters but I am still game.

P.S. What about our Siberian comrades?

Re: Ferreira November Vertical/New York City

As the Old and Odd tasting has shifted forward to the first week of November, let's consider shifting the Ferreria vertical to the first or second week of December.

Reactions?

Re: Old & Odd, New York, Friday 17th October 2008

I need to start at about 6 pm. I have a memorial service that I am attending in Westchester the next day and cannot burn any midnight oil.
My vote, therefore, would be to keep looking for another venue.

Ferreira October 17 Vertical/New York City

Now that I can once again contemplate drinking port after yesterdays double horizontal, I want to propose a Ferreira vertical for late November (now October due to the O&O tasting moving dates).

I have 1978 Ferreira, 1983 Ferreira Quinta do Seixo, 1985 Ferreira, 1995 Ferreira.

Re: Double horizontal of ’83 and ’85, Brooklyn, Sat 13 Sept ’08

If this tasting is done blind, who plans to run all the pours and placement of glasses? Remember that this is a comparison between 83 and 85 so someone needs to know which is Dow, etc. The person will also have to determine in what order each flight of two glasses is drunk. I certainly do not plan t...

Do the cheesecakes get a vote also?

I also vote for a simpler cheesecake (they were delicious at the 1970 tasting).
