Re: London Quinta de Vargellas tasting - 24th March
Hello, I'm always late and disorganised and everything (I only learnt this tasting was on Tuesday on Monday, having thought it was on Friday till then, but that's another story). Apologies for being me, I guess. Very nice to meet Ben, Jacob, Wolfgang, Tom and Nicos for the first time, and thanks aga...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
Have I really managed to muck things up by joining in late and having the timerity to do so while simultaneously being left-handed? If so, I will drink a fine. That should teach me not to do it in the future.
I am happy to pretend not to be sinister, but it will only be pretending.

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
The 3 I believe are AxelP (24th), myself (26th and known!) and DerekT (28th). I will leave you to guess which one has a birth year port in the line up! Call me silly (I know you will), but I was somewhat bemused that Derek (being the only person in the listing I'm sure I've met - apologies to Ben a...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
Thank-you all. Julian, do reminder me sometime why the placemat software cares about my handedness? That already feels like taking itsy-bitsy-ness to the extreme. And then some. Derek, looks like I'm waiting on you for some adoption support. Given how long it's taken me to throw my hat in the ring, ...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
Hello, Ben, many apologies for the delay, but I think I got permission to come along last night (it was less than a ringing endorsement), so please could you ink me in on the invitation list. I'll next need to sponsor a bottle, so I hope someone will be in contact...? Very much looking forward to se...

Re: London Quinta De Vargellas tasting - 24th March
All, In a parallel thread on another possible tasting event (to which I'd add a slightly smug link if only I knew how), I indicated an urge to drink some very nice port soon, and was directed to this event. Would I be able to register my interest (but not, yet, commit, as I have yet to broach the su...

Re: So, err, what's the best shipper, eh?
Well there we go - good problem solving, team. I'll attend the November main event (either date fine by me), and also think about an interim May occasion, although a friend's wedding and stag that month may knock it off the radar. Best advice, as proferred, might therefore be to attend the Vargellas...

Re: So, err, what's the best shipper, eh?
Well blimey, frankly. Clearly I need to keep a closer eye on things. I planted my acorn of a proposal on Thursday 12th, and gave it some love and a bit of water on the 19th, after four or so other posts. And now, I come back to see how my sapling is getting on, another four days later, and it's gone...

Re: So, err, what's the best shipper, eh?
Well, a 1955 Horizontal would certainly be a fine thing, so I'll keep my eyes on that. I have nothing older than a 1970 in my meagre cellar, but would be willing to search for a rarity (by which I mean one Uncle Tom doesn't have) or chip in another way. Meanwhile, 20 bottles sounds like too many to ...

So, err, what's the best shipper, eh?
Hello everyone, Happy New Year, and all that. You'll have perhaps noticed that I've been absent for a long time - for which, my apologies - but I recently attended the Cambridge University Tiddlywinks Club annual meal, at which Mr Wiseman provided some fine '63 port, and it got my taste buds going a...

Derek, Julian, I agree that this looks absolutely fab, though I also support the suggestion that years go down and shippers across. One other request. Rather than having sunshines, could we have empty circles (or another symbol of your choice)? I'm sure Julian is already considering what additional ...

I would guess that it makes no difference. Glass stoppers are never airtight and even if they were I don't think the wine would absorb a detectable amount of oxygen over a period of a day or two. The most effective job a glass stopper does is to keep the flies out of your port in summer  Dere...

Wedding port
Derek, The missus and I, when we married 5.5 years ago, had a wine list as a gift list, with the theory that we'd crack the bottles with those who bought them, as an incentive for them to buy us a nice bottle, and to stay good friends. So far, we've had just one of the 68 bottles, a vintage Dom Peri...

Halibut
I saw this title and thought you were going to tell us about a lovely piece of halibut you'd had for dinner.
Doesn't seem such a terrible thing to do, to me. Still, there we go - lesson learnt, as you say.

The length of Lent
Chaps, I comment the Port Lent, of which I had not previously heard. I would like to boast that I managed to give up cigars, haircuts, peaches and watching Bob the Builder over the period, which is pretty impressive, eh? :D I feel positively purged. For those sadly tied to the Christian Lent (a much...

There's no red port left
Apart from being an aide-memoire for which side of a boat is port and on which side of the boat a red buoy light should pass when entering that port... I'm struck by the large number of tastings that have already taken place this year. I'm also struck by their excellent quality - between us, we have...

Le Nez du Vin wine aromas
All, I am frustrated by my inability to identify recognisable aromas in port (and other wines) reliably, and am considering whether a box of smells might help me. Le Nez du Vin retail a kit of 54 aromas (*) for white and red wines (see http://www.nezduvin.co.uk/nezduvin_54.htm ) for around £200. Var...

If a sports team is pants [technical term - means 'not playing nearly to full potential'] in the first half, and great in the second half, I think this can be attributed to the manager doing his job well at half time. One example of this that springs to mind is Liverpool FC in the European cup final...
